joinca User ID: 72473026 United States 07/28/2017 09:45 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I honestly had no idea the 2nd largest earthquake ever recorded was in Alaska, in 1964. Quoting: Master of Nothing This was a pretty cool read about it. [link to www.npr.org] "HENRY FOUNTAIN: Sure. Well, it was a heck of an earthquake. It was the second-most powerful ever recorded, you know, in recorded history - or since they've been recording earthquakes with instruments. It was originally thought to be about the same power as the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. But in retrospect - or shortly thereafter, it was determined it was much, much more powerful. You know, a rough indication is how long the ground shakes for. And in the San Francisco earthquake, there was a foreshock at first that shook for about 20 seconds. And then the main shocks shook for something like 40 or 45 seconds. So that's about a minute. In Alaska, the ground shook for about 4.5 minutes, which is a really, really long time. As compared to the Japanese earthquake, the Tohoku earthquake of 2011, the one that killed, I think, about 17,000 people and - you know, it led to the Fukushima nuclear disaster - that one was slightly less powerful." Magnitude 9.2: The 1964 Great Alaska Earthquake [link to youtu.be (secure)] and 1964 Alaska Earthquake Footage [link to youtu.be (secure)] My Dad got a sabbatical as a teacher and our family drove to Alaska in the summer of 1965 and stayed in Fairbanks. I remember a lot of the damage in Valdez where a huge tsunami had hit the port. The dock and large oil tanks were tumbled over and the railroad rails twisted like spaghetti even a year later. "The government will one day be corrupt and full of liars, and the people will flock to the one that tells the truth." - “Tyranny is defined as that which is legal for the government but illegal for the citizenry.” - "The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not." - "I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them." - "A Country with no Border, is not a country" -- Thomas Jefferson We MUST NEVER forget what Kamala Harris did to Justice Kavanaugh & his family! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 48078474 United States 07/28/2017 10:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | [link to weather.com (secure)] "An unusual weather pattern for late July is taking shape and will bring a winter-like coastal storm, with the threat of flash flooding, to the mid-Atlantic and Northeast coasts this weekend and possibly into early next week, putting a damper on weekend beach plans. A strong upper-level trough, or southward dip in the jet stream, will move into the East this weekend with a cold front that will even push through much of the South, bringing cooler temperatures and lower dew points from the Midwest into the East and South." According to local weather reports i'm supposed to get 4-6 inches of rain today/tonight alone. Weird weather. |

To know where your heart is, look where your mind goes when it wanders. A rock in bad hands killed Abel. A rock in good hands killed Goliath. It isn't about the rock. A true warrior fights not because he hates the one in front of him, but because he loves those behind him. INTP-A |

Simple27 (OP) User ID: 74957172 United States 07/28/2017 03:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Spectacular Perseid Meteor Shower 2017 - All Eyes on the Skies The annual August Perseid meteor shower probably ranks as the all-time favorite meteor shower of the year. The peak of this spectacular meteor shower is coming in just a few weeks! In 2017, the Perseids will be a little more difficult to see due to the presence of the moon, which will be three-quarters full and will rise shortly before the shower hits its peak around midnight local time. "But the good news is that the Perseids are rich in fireballs; otherwise the moon would really mess with them" says NASA meteor expert Bill Cooke. No matter where you live worldwide, the 2017 Perseid meteor shower will probably produce the greatest number of meteors on the mornings of August 11, 12 and 13.
