I wanted to share something on the local news this morning that had everyone rather puzzled. During the winter it isn't uncommon for there to be a few water main breaks due to sub-freezing temps - usually 20F and under.

This morning there were 4 main water breaks in Denver that really snarled traffic. We haven't been cold enough for this to be due to cold weather. No reason other than coincidence.

I don't believe in coinkydinks.

It sure sounds like yesterday was a day to quickly forget. I will tell you a little anecdote about Christmas trees.

Some ten years ago, my mom put up the tree, while I was visiting her. Of course, to me nerve wrecking, she was adjusting every ball, every ornament, matching the lights with a precission that would have made Pythagoras proud.

And two hours later, there she stood, looking at it, with pride, her face glowing. She did such a great job! I even got enthousiastic. "All we need is to put the peak on top and we are done!" she said.

And while doing so,.. she leaned a bit to much into the tree and there it went, crashing down to the side. Balls shattered, lights smashed, silver garlands all over the place.

My mom, the sweetest woman in the whole wide world, looked at it and I saw her face expression change, from utter satisfaction through despare into complete anger. She grabbed the tree by it's top and swung it around the living room. All I could say was: "Fuck that! I'm going home!" I was just as pumped up about the whole scene as she was. So I left. I don't think I ever got home that quick as that day.

Of course I returned later, with new balls (Christmas ones that is), garlands, lights etc, as a present to her, maybe persuading her into setting it up again. I felt so bad. And while I was on my way, I bumped into the neighbor that lived across my mom, quite the nosey type I must add. She winked me to come closer and whispered: "Uhhm, I know it is none of my business, but did I see your mom swing the Christmas tree through the living room?" I looked around, knowing what would be the talk of the day for the coming weeks and simply nodded and moved on.

Needless to say that the story of my mom throwing the tree around soon was a common secret in town and became a hilarious tale to tell for many years to come after that and my mom would be the one laughing the loudest.

And even now, now she has passed, around this holiday season it still is a memory to me that carries me to remind me her unique, sweet spirit and what a beautiful soul she was.

We need stories in our lifes and we need to be able to share them. It makes us breathe. Not always pleasant in the moment when it happens , but after a while you reflect back and see how important it is to put things into perspective.

Or just simply to have a memory that gets you through times in which we can use a smile.

Random:

There is a movie shoot going on in my neighborhood tonight until the wee hours in the morning. Which is not the norm, this isn't L.A., lol. Some (all?) of the shooting is happening on my street! About 4 houses up. There are trucks, trailers, equipment and people all over the place around here! Earlier they were shooting a guy walking down my side of the sidewalk, while the camera was on a motorized cart in the street following/facing him from the side. I was peeking out my window as they went by - my peering eyes might end up in the movie :)
