So I'm the only asshole in my office who isn't on salary. I've also been there YEARS longer than the others. My boss texted ME this morning to put an analysis together for him. ME, on a Sunday. Off the clock. Why the hell wouldn't he text one of his salary employees for this?!

WTF?!



Rant over. Aggravating as f*ck!

You could say "hey, I'm not doing any working anymore until you put me on salary like everyone else."

But, they could also say "OK, you're fired."

So, c'est la vie and around and around it goes.

Just terrible

If you are hourly, then you absolutely should get paid for whatever time you spend today. Why does he think it's "off the clock" - just because it's a Sunday? It's times like this when it's beneficial to be an hourly vs. salaried person. Bill for/account for this time, you deserve it!

is right Sim. Your boss sucks. Told you that on many occasions. If you don't watch yourself you are the one sitting at home with a big burn out at your age, while they don't lose one minute of sleep over it. He texts YOU on Sunday, because he knows you won't say no. You are often way too polite and loyal. And they know it and abuse that knowledge. I know it might be difficult for you to say no, but if you never take a stand against it, they will keep abusing you, till you are drained and then find a way to get rid of you, blaming you for it.

You have many skills and qualities, that do not only apply to the field you are in now. With an economy that is picking up, there must be enough companies that will be glad to have you with your experience and work attitude and age, much closer to home.

And I mean that from the bottom of my heart and as your friend. You give yourself way too little credit for what you can achieve. You have shown what you are capable of, more than anyone else, in work and in life. Use that to YOUR benefit instead of always saying yes. They don't own you. YOU do!

This is true. I'll hand write the time on my time card. Anything done while not punched in at the office is considered off the clock. Which is why he shouldn't have even texted ME for this analysis. And of course he didn't say to add the time to my card. Dick.

I'm not shocked he didn't say to add the time to your card. Just do it an don't even mention it to him. He'll pay you for it, and he'll eventually stop asking you to do stuff on the weekend now that he knows you'll expect to get paid.

Work stuff sucks! Sorry you have to deal with that today.

Sim should even charge double time. It is overtime, even on a Sunday and that is a different wage percentage. Over here Sundays count 200%. I stick with my earlier comment though. Saying no is also an option, how hard that may be from your own character.

Thanks Mezzo. I have to call a meeting with him anyway about something else, but would like to bring up salary and this will just give me a little more ammo to back up my request. The fact that whenever he texts me on a weekend to do something for him, I do it. Without complaining (to him lol).

It sucks because I like my job and what I do, I just don't like the complete overload of work at a pay rate that isn't worth it.

I was tempted to say I will do it first thing tomorrow when I get to the office, but I know that he needs it for a big meeting tomorrow morning because he had me doing a bunch of analysis's on Friday at the office for it. As much of a dick as he can be, I wouldn't leave him hanging like that for such an important meeting.

I hear you Sim. I know you love what you do, but they also abuse that, also shown through the fact that they will keep you from working this same job for competition. That fact alone means how good you are at what you do and all the energy you put in. How else could it be that they overload you with this work load and leave the others alone.

Try to use that to your benefit. You have a way better hand than you sometimes think you have.

Last thing I will say about it. Be brave, be bold. With respect, but use the cards that you hold and make demands.

Good point. I think the rule of thumb here is that any overtime is time and 1/2. I believe holidays might be double-time? Regardless, it should be a higher wage, but since you don't know for sure, at least charge for the time at your normal rate.

You truly are. It is mainly a blessing, but can be a curse at times too. Don't change that. Just sometimes set your limit.

Yes that, but you also are a hard worker who takes pride in doing a good job and maintaining professionalism.

And as such, you should get paid for all the time you work, weekends and all.

Good point KI! Sim, I would submit those hours as overtime if you are working 40 hours per week. Your boss might balk, but by law they have to pay you. It's obvious they rely on you.
