An algae bloom off southwest Florida, called Florida red tide, has killed 174 manatees since January, the highest number to die from red tide in a calendar year, state wildlife officials said Monday. A red tide is a higher than normal concentration of a microscopic algae that appears in the Gulf of Mexico. At high enough concentrations, the algae can turn the water red or brown, hence the name..." Quoting: Anonymous Coward 33885280 "MELBOURNE, Florida — Florida wildlife officials are trying to figure out why more than 100 brown pelicans have died between Melbourne and Merritt Island. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said Friday it has sent samples two weeks ago to the National Wildlife Health Centers. But so far there is no conclusive answer..." Hundreds of dead crabs were also washed ashore in Coronel city, about 530km (330 miles) from the capital, Santiago. The move by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) comes after what the agency described as “elevated strandings of California sea lion pups” in Los Angeles, Orange, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Diego counties. Since Jan. 1, more than 900 sea lions have been admitted to rehabilitation facilities, far outpacing historical stranding rates for 2008 to 2012, according to NOAA..." The Department of Primary Industries confirmed yesterday it was also investigating the unexplained deaths of previously unaffected Sydney rock oysters. The department's scientists are working overtime to identify the disease before it causes further damage to the industry. It is feared the Port Stephens disease, combined with the recent Hawkesbury River oyster deaths, will lead to an oyster shortage throughout NSW. Several growers who spoke to the Newcastle Herald said the disease, which first appeared in January, had destroyed their 2013 winter crop and also next year's. "It's pretty much wiped me out - it's had a massive impact on the industry," Lemon Tree Passage grower Paul Merrick said. He has lost 80 per cent of this year's crop, worth $200,000..." The report, “Restoring a Degraded Gulf of Mexico: Wildlife and Wetlands Three Years into the Gulf Oil Disaster,” found that dolphins were among the hardest hit animals. As of just earlier this year, infant dolphins were dying six times faster than they did before the spill. Scientists aren’t even yet sure of the extent of the massive spill, given that it was impossible to fully clean up the chemical-laden, carcinogenic oil. Photos: [link to news.discovery.com] “Three years after the initial explosion, the impacts of the disaster continue to unfold,” Doug Inkley, senior scientist for the National Wildlife Federation and lead author of the report, said in a press release. “Dolphins are still dying in high numbers in the areas affected by oil. These ongoing deaths — particularly in an apex predator like the dolphin — are a strong indication that there is something amiss with the Gulf ecosystem.”' [link to news.discovery.com] Large basking shark washes ashore in Misquamicut Quoting: Sol Neman 39070307 'Westerly — A 28 1/2 -foot-long male basking shark weighing several tons washed ashore in Misquamicut this morning. Anoxic events may have caused mass extinctions.[1] These mass extinctions include some that geobiologists use as time markers in biostratigraphic dating. Once the oceans are dead the deaths are going to go all the way up the food chain. Quoting: Ella es Creativa "Combined together with the other recent mass marine die-offs and the recent release of the The State of the Ocean Report 2013 from an international panel of marine scientists, it's clear that the oceans are indeed dying and a mass extinction is underway. The report carries ominous news: "Oxygen levels are dropping and ocean waters are acidifying at the fastest rate in at least 300 million years when the greatest marine extinction in earth's history took place." [link to www.examiner.com] "Commercial fishermen off the coast of British Columbia came home this fall without having caught a single sardine, an outcome that suggests a $32 million fishery has collapsed." Even just one washing up could be a once in a lifetime event. Scientists and researchers are both concerned by the recent deaths and puzzled as to the cause of the rare appearances of these seldom seen creatures." "Sailor Ivan Macfadyen, a frequent sailor on the ocean, was shocked and horrified on a recent voyage from Osaka Japan to San Francisco. Macfayden reports that,"After we left Japan, it felt as if the ocean itself was dead." |

But, even for cancer, there is only one prime cause. Summarized in a few words, the prime cause of cancer is the replacement of the respiration of oxygen in normal body cells by a fermentation of sugar." the percentage of oxygen in our atmosphere dropped from 23% (12 generations ago) to less than 21% now. Why do you think the first aid is an oxygen mask? Why do you think hyperbaric oxygen chambers heals so many so well? How is an aquarium oxygenated? (we will have to this at an ocean scale !) |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 2150977 United States 10/23/2013 07:29 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | this is what Al Gore talks about all the time, the oceans absorb all the excess Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere so levels don't rise in the air. Until....the oceans can't hold anymore. Then the levels start rising very fast. And it is a feedback loop. The warmer it gets, the less carbon dioxide the oceans can absorb. As the water heats up, they release more carbon dioxide, which makes it warmer, which makes it release more carbon dioxide. The biggest problem though is carbon dioxide makes the water acidic. The reason the beverage industry sells billions of gallons of soda with carbon dioxide dissolved in it, is because carbonated drinks are acidic. They help dissolve the food in your stomach. In Europe they drink carbonated water everywhere, because they want the acidic carbonation without all the corn syrup and sugar. It's the acidic carbonation that you are partly use to and addicted to. |
