The Carrington Event is distinguished by a smaller CME prior to the X-Class that melted telegraph lines, etc.

"What happens is the back wave rides up onto the prior wave and sort of builds potential, like a "voltage" increase.The surge of electricity here is a result of the magnetosphere snapping back into place. Causing magnetic reconnection events which induces current in the upper atmosphere. These inductions wreck havok on conductive material down here on Earth.The reconnection events happen when the CME leaves Earth, not when it hits Earth.So that is how the build up effect us more. "As it is, a weaker field means less induction per X amount of force from a CME. We will see less induction compared to the past with higher mag field strength. As a weaker field has less equipotential lines of magnetic force.
Doesn't mean it won't kill the grid, it can and will one day.
