That "little head" is the same the world over. In 3rd world countries, women have no rights. In some countries they are killed if they don't obey their husbands. They "own" their women.

in rich countries where most offspring make it to adults they only have a few kids.

There was a fantastic documentary on BBC 2 the other evening about population, and how, contrary to popular belief, the population of the planet will decrease over time, not increase.

Having lots of children tends to related to a) lack of education and b) poverty.

Many countries where inhabitants live in serious poverty are more likely to have lots of children. There are many reasons for this, the main one is very likely lack of birth control and lack of education.

There also tends to be higher mortality rates, so having more children ensures there are some who survive.

Look it up, the information is out there.

The more humanity is lifted out of poverty, the more the population will naturally balance out. Populations that have better standards of living, have less children.
