Jerusalem locked down by fiercest snowstorm in years - and crazy weather in Egypt and snow in Cairo!!!
The hilltop city of Jerusalem was paralysed on Friday by its fiercest snowstorm in years, with its mayor calling out the army to help stranded motorists.

"We are battling a storm of rare ferocity," Mayor Nir Barkat said in a statement as snow in the Holy City piled up to around 37 centimetres (15 inches), while outlying areas had much deeper drifts.

Main roads into the Holy City, which climb around 795 metres (2,600 feet) above sea level were closed and police appealed to drivers not to attempt the journey.

The weather here is getting really crazy - I don't ever remember it that bad here in Cairo, in sinai yes especially in St. Katherine Monastary, but that's up in the mountains.

We had snow today in Cairo, since 2 days now extreme cold, rain and lots of wind. Alexandra is experiencing some flooding, we also have issue with some roads being flooded due to the rain. Several ports were closed due to very rough seas (didn't affect shipping) but fishermen and recreational boats and tourist operations were halted in the sea.

VERY unusual. Sitting here in Cairo next to a heater with 2 pair of socks, 2 sweaters and a hat! Still cold!\\

Variety is the spice of life, in many ways.

Including the weather. Snow can be great fun, and I am not just saying it as someone with northern euro blood.

Having arid 40 degrees Celsius all the time? That's what hell must feel like it. As Bill Hicks pointed out, human beings are not lizards. Having different seasons is a good thing, brah.

Yes but we're not built for this weather - our homes have no insulation, you can't imagine how cold it gets in our flats, they're made to keep the heat out and stay cool inside, tiles in my house are ICE COLD. Even with 2 pair of socks and slippers I feel the cold from the floor. Anyways, we are dealing with it best as we can.

We are thinking of changing our flag - what you think? The Eagle stepped down due to bad weather...lol

While lower-lying areas of Israel were spared the snow, heavy rain accompanied by high winds caused flooding in many places.

Public radio said that some international flights bound for Ben Gurion airport, near Tel Aviv, were diverted to Larnaca, in nearby Cyprus, but traffic was later returned to normal.

Ramallah and Bethlehem, Palestinian cities near Jerusalem, were also coated in snow and some lower-lying areas suffered flooding from heavy rain.

The Gaza Strip was lashed by torrential rain for a third day, and its Hamas rulers said on Friday that so far residents had been evacuated from 60 flooded homes since storms hit the coastal territory on Wednesday.

The UN Relief and Works Agency, which cares for Palestinian refugees, said its staff had been working "round the clock" to provide emergency services.

"In the West Bank, dozens of emergency response units have been delivering food parcels, mattresses and blankets," spokesman Chris Gunness said in a statement.

"In Gaza, UNRWA has worked with local municipalities to evacuate dozens of flood victims, particularly in the northern areas which have seen severe flooding."

Still raining here in Cairo. The whole area here all the way east is experiencing some really unusual weather. I have not seen it like this extreme, as I said, in the Mountains in Sinai yes it would get really cold and you get snow somtimes, but not in Cairo and reports are from all over Middle East.

Just about 3 weeks ago I still needed a fan during the day and at night to stay cool...we had a few really hot days with 28 - 30 C in Cairo end of November, and now this. Someone tell me how that's normal.

Why do Arab descendants in Gaza have their own refugee agency when no other group of refugees, real refugees in much worse conditions all over the world, has one speciallyu devoted to them? Beyond ridiculous.

Anyway, this is just the start of winter and rain season, so it looks like for 3rd year in a row, Israel will get to replenish its water aquifers and Lake Kinneret will ride close to the top red-line (after the drought of mid-2000s, it's huge).

This will help bridge the gap to when newer desalination plants continue to come online, and both Dead-Red and Dead-Med mega projects turn the country into Water powerhouse. Water being more precious than oil in that region long-term...

Niiice.

Just toughen up and have fun with it.

As someone who's very young, I actually like history and one of the reasons: perspective.

How did people do before air-conditioning? In this case, before heating and fancy insulation? They not only learned to survive but thrived.

Obviously if this were a long-term thing, it would be problematic but for a few hours? Even a few days? Come on, put some extra clothing on, heat something up, get moving and shaking, LOL, try not to drown, it'll be alright.

I hope you are OK. The solution for this is to all stay in one same room at night with blankets, coats, heater if you have one. Don't disperse the heat.

Those without a roof above their head will have a more difficult time.

I hope your army and government has opened shelters maybe in the Metro like they do in Paris during the harsh Winter days. Underground is always warmer.

Also I am sure the mosques must have soup kitchens to feed the poorest.

Thank we are fine. Underground Metro is not a good idea because of the rain, and everything runs down. But its not so bad here yet.
Yes, I was involved in my community today for an orphanage to provide blankets, jackets etc...I had old things to give away. And many people help when they see a homeless person. I'm not familiar if Mosques are doing anything but I wouldn't doubt it if they opened their doors. We will hear later in the news if there's any updates I'll post again. Just til tomorrow then hopefully it will get more bearable again.

Re: Jerusalem locked down by fiercest snowstorm in years - and crazy weather in Egypt and snow in Cairo!!!
It's clearing up here in Cairo, still wet and cold, many big water spots in the road, difficult to park and walk around to avoid this and getting sprayed by the water from other cars.

Today was flooding in Gaza, Israel opened one crossing to send fuel and water pumps, Gaza has had 12 hour power outages per day since a few weeks now because they have no fuel.

It's on the news if you google "Gaza flooded"

Many evacuated. Israel is still facing the same issues with cold, snow, water...we're in the same weather til now. Floods are a problem in our area because the water doesn't drain easily here.

With all the murderous infighting going on in Cairo and other parts of Egypt, the snow may be the only way to stop them. Let the temps drop to Zero or below and these desert rats are going to head for the nearest heater - screw fighting with anyone else.

Anyone else see the hand of God in this one?
