No. I think the atrocious grammar and the willingness to accept it as normal is a real problem.

A lot of barely literate mouth breathers try to explain it away or justify it by saying things like "it's just a website" or "I am on my phone" -- but let's cut the shit.

Most of the people typing this way genuinely feel their level of communication is acceptable and it bleeds over into every other facet of their life. These are the people you see wearing pajama pants at the supermarket. Fuck all of them.

I think that it stems not from the argument of the moment, but a need to establish that one person is better educated than another.

Yes, good grammar has a definite place in the world, and communicating clearly is a plus in most situations. But that doesn't seem to be the intent with the Grammar "Nazi". They tend to use their knowledge of the rules to belittle others, and as a way to show that, if one factor can be shown to be incorrect, then the entire person, is, by association, bad and wrong.

That the idea of Grammar being as "important" is only about sixty years old and that we all managed fairly well before that, is lost on some people. They simply parrot back what they learned in school, or college and cannot see that a living language not only can, but will change.

So the next time you see a solid example of a Grammar Nazi, remember to ask them this:

For me it is respecting others and trying to communicate in the clearest possible way. We all make typos occasionally but some of what you see here makes your eyes burn.

How are you meant to value someones opinion if they don't respect you enough to check their spelling and have a rudimentary understanding of grammar?

It's not like we are writing technical journals or even using advanced forms of language here, to not care is to undermine your own position.

1) In order for a grammar Nazi to properly correct what you're saying, they must first understand what you mean.

This means being a grammar Nazi does not imply 'only been able to understand language which falls into syntax rules' which someone said earlier in the thread.

Your grammar skills and grasp of the English language directly reflect on you as a person. I don't understand why people are so damn lazy they can't be bother to learn the difference between your and you're. I mean, come on people! It's not difficult. Math can be difficult. Grammar is not. Anyone that's attempted programming knows there is a specific syntax that is required or your code doesn't work. The same goes for human interaction and grammar. In programming, the compiler simply stops and points out the error and won't let you continue before it's corrected. Why should grammar be any different? The fact is, your grammar directly affects how people perceive you. Do you want to appear to be an idiot or do you want to get your point across in a correct, meaningful way? Stop making excuses for your laziness in high school. Lay off the wacky weed and/or alcoholic weekends and learn some grammar. Expecting more isn't arrogance. It isn't unreasonable. It isn't Naziism.
