Re: Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
I don't get lawns either, but they're forced on a lot of peoples homes. We forever get shit about our garden. A few years back the council did a "bring wild Britain back" project or some such about bring back wild flowers and stuff to British gardens. They even send out free packets of seeds to homes. Sounds great, right? Well, as soon as we'd grown them we had the local council coming around complaining about all the wild flowers and stuff growing in our garden and threatening fines! <_< Far as I can tell it was some sort of trick to try and fine people for "overgrown wild gardens", which they themselves promoted. Hey, it's a £1 packet of seed for them, then few hundred pound fine for you! God, they're fucking evil bitches.

Re: Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
In my sociology classes as an undergrad, we discussed in detail that people throughout history have had a desire to imitate the upper echelon of society, thus the reason that people have been so keen, and taken so well, to the idea of suburbs.

Everybody gets there own little kingdom, with a stable (garage), walls (fence), etc....you get the idea.

But my question to yall is this: Why do people care so much about mowing their lawns?

I just saw a commercial about a "cub cadet" drivable lawnmower or some shit and was just blown away at the superficial nature of everything they were advertising to.

I mean, I personally like the "natural" yards that I see sometimes, but when was it ingrained in our society that one has to keep their yard trimmed at all times?

And not only that, but if you want to be awesome at cutting grass nowadays, you basically need a grass cutting car.

What happened to the lawnmowers I slaved over as a kid? You know the ones with 4 wheels, but you push it? And why does it matter to cut the grass? Couldn't the ground used for something much more meaningful than the superficial purpose of planting unnatural sod?

Just please help me understand why people are so anxious to keep their yards awesome. Does it go back to the envy of royalty, bread into our bloodlines, which causes us to slave over stupid grass?

What is up with mowing?

I suppose one could argue that its superficial, but its also practical. Who wants to have to fight their way through a jungle when they walk out the front door? And never mind the possibility of attracting snakes, wasps, and other pests.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 42719781

yup. mosquitos love tall grass. chiggers are nasty. if you don't mow often, the weeds go to seed and take over. if you have allergies or asthma this is not good.

If you don't mow, you get little animal kingdoms
in your people kingdom.
Snakes, insects, skunks, etc.

Re: Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
there's some dick with a stick up his ass who fusses about your dog taking a shit on the public island that isn't even his land. He's worried about the dumb fuckin grass on the public area.

I agree op, not only is it idiotic but it depletes all the vegetation of nutrients. that crap fertilizer people buy is nothing but nitrogen and sulfer, does not replace the other 100 micronutrients. the vegetation that grows on it just gets weedier and weedier, more and more worthless. provides no nutrition to animals or insects that eat it.

no habitat for bunnies or animals. true it might prevent insects but then no food for birds or animals that eat insects.

People recently discovered the idea of letting the grass grow at he public parks instead of hacking down all the bushes and trees and tall grass. MOst of them are still blank fields of grass, like some over autistic active dumbass has to keep compulsively mowing the grass to make sure it's one inch tall.

what is the fucking point? to render everything sterile and controllable, predictable, no life, no animals.

Re: Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
the dumbest thing in the world is people using all these herbicides to kill weeds on their fucking lawns, herbicide is not harmless. It screws up all sorts of animals especially if they are pregnant in the spring, when people put it on.

fertilizer run off kills everything in the streams, increases algae growth which reduces oxygen in the water, fish and aquatic life dies off.

all people care about is doing whatever everyone else is doing, that is all that matters to them. they want to be on the winning side with the most people in case shit breaks out.

In the southern U.S. people mow their grass so snakes don't slither up to the house undetected. A bunch of clueless urban intellectuals at a university are hatching sociological theories? Oh brother... You folks need to get out more.

why not plant your whole yard in rhododendrons or something, never have to mow your lawn again, will have coolest yard in the world. You can walk through them, they are full of beautiful flowers, they provide shelter for animals. add privacy, detail to your monotonous landscape.

yeah when you let your grass grow, eventually the 'weeds' take over which are a cascading variety of beautiful wildflowers that attract all sorts of birds, bluebirds, finches, red winged black birds, orioles, songbirds, etc etc. that's what they eat, the seeds of those weeds. Also all sorts of insects like butterflies, monarch butterflies. I haven't seen a butterfly around here in a decade. when I was a kid, there were butterflies flying around everywhere.

Re: Why Do People Mow Their Yards? Is this the most superficial practice of modern society
there used to be such a huge population of birds of all kinds before everything became a godles lifeless monotonous suburb development. birds eat insects. insects feed on a variety of wild plants, that grow wild when you don't mow everything down with your mower.

Also you got the dumbass chainsaw phenonema, dumbass people who own chainsaws and want trees to go cut down so they run around cutting all the trees down for no clear purpose. they will claim they look like they're gonna fall down and hurt someone, jesus christ. then they haul the wood away so animals have no rotten logs to live in, all kinds of insects live in those rotten logs that birds and animals eat.

It's like people are so ignorant of how the ecosystem works, or just don't care, or in some cases, actually hate the 'ecosystem', because they are just black hearted nihilist psychopaths.

I can't stand a fucking suburb. Burn them all down.

But I mow about 20 feet out from the house in every direction. I think more that is just dumb. Besides, all the big lovely shady trees + animals keep the grass at a nice even height without my interference :) If it's six inches one month and four inches the next, I'm not particularly bothered by it and I don't see why anyone else should be, either!

"Found throughout the eastern half of the United States, copperheads often live near humans and blend smoothly into their environments. In fact, they bite more people each year than any other venomous snake in the U.S. Although the chances of dying from copperhead venom are slim, bites can result in permanent damage if you don't seek immediate medical care.

"Copperheads often live in suburbs and residential areas, especially near streams and woods. They may hide beneath sheds, wood piles and other yard debris, and they frequently shelter in abandoned buildings, too."

You shouldn't cut it too low

You can get weeds

It is more fun when drunk

If it gets too high you can attract animals and will have trouble selling it if it looks like that

Hardly. In the town I live, if you do not take
adequate care of your lawn, the city will cite
you. If you do not cut your lawn, pull weeds
(over 6 inches), a city worker comes out and
does the work.

You are charged $50.00 an hour for the work,
which, if you refuse to pay, the city will put a
lien on your house. No shit.

Another part of the scheme, is that the owner of
the property is responsible for all maintenance and
upkeep of grass, weeds, and trash, from the OTHER
SIDE of your perimeter fence, to the alley, all of
which, is the city's property.

So, a big NO to your theory, from my point of view.

I need to find somebody to come and cut my grass. i don't even have a 1/4 acre lot and the first guy i called wanted $125.00 to mow weed eat and clean it up. He never even came to the door to talk to me. he just drove in, turned around and drove out. I talked with his wife later that day and she told me what he quoted and then he said to maintain it would be $75.00 for every two weeks. I told her for a 1/4 acre lot? Fuck NO!

The perfect 'lawn' is a natural mix of dandelion and clover. All 100% eatable and no maintenance.
