i suggest a 12 gauge shotgun, a pistol, a semi auto rifle (ak or ar), and at least one hunting rifle. Point is, your weapon depends on the situation...

You wouldn't hunt with a pistol
You wouldn't defend a house with an AK (you could, but bullets will fly through walls)
You wouldn't defend the homeland from invaders with only a shotgun

food and helping your neighbors...

Your brain.... if your talking about a weapon I would go with bow/crossbow.. ammo will be plenty... people that are to dependent on their guns are gone be sheep to slaughter when the ammo is gone

I was thinking along the same lines. Depending on what your target is, you can always (well, most of the time) get your arrow back to re-use it.

For a home defense setup, sure. If you might need to be mobile, the weight is going to be a problem.
