SoftwareDefinedRadio vs Old school handhelds? Anyone
So I recently have read a lot on the Baofeng handheld radios, and have seen my dads old collection of HAM stuff when moving before. It seems like a lot of gear just to get in communication with someone - what do you all think, or know about SDR that you could open up the world to a beginner? I am eyeing the HackRF one project, and might pre-order it once I learn a bit more.

Basically the HackRF is a USB powered PCB that can transmit or recieve at half duplex (I do know some IT\technical wireless information), at basically any frequency. Sure, maybe if SHTF and you are out away from civillization, you can bring a battery pack or what have you.. but you can accomplish this:

That is full fledged linux running what I am guessing is GNUradio, with the HackRF attached via a microusb to usb adapater. Neat stuff!

Does it have a 'Roger Beep'?

No use without a Roger Beep.

Considering its software controlled I don't see why you can't somehow hack it to send a waveform you created everytime you release whatever key it is to transmit (is it that simple on GNUradio?) Haha :)

It's not really " a lot of gear". My Kenwood Ham radio is actually quite small(TS 480 SAT). It's designed to be mobile, for your car, yet has everything that a much bigger /older set has, 50/100 watt, etc. Takes up no more space than a CB radio. I use it in home, not for my car.

Just add an antenna and the power source.

I prefer old school to the computerized stuff.

Well, therein lies the other big gap I seem to see -

List Price: $1510.65
Your Price: $1224.95
Less $250 Instant
Coupon: $974.95

If I order a HackRF, I have two devices I can turn into full stations, and reach out pretty far (right?) depending on antenna and conditions.

1. I have a chromebox on the way, even stock it still can connect keyboard+mouse+hackRF and have 1 more usb3.0 spot open

2. My nexus 7 tablet, I haven't installed linux yet, but from what I read it is easy enough

Chromebox costs 179$, obviously a monitor + keyboard\mouse adds more, but ~600 for chromebox and the hackRF with antenna is already half as cheap as the 480 SAT.

Nexus 7 wifi 16\32gb tablet + otg cable to connect included hackRF is ~$660 - the price differences are huge.

and obviously, what I am typing now from, my home computer could be used also

This + your hackRF maybe velroed to, or just sitting beside the chromebox.

Well, it's a personal preference thing, I guess. I just like seeing what kind of contacts I can get, doing it the old fashioned way.

So, update.. I got to playing with my dads Yaesu FT-767GX, and his scanner, and might be playing with his FT-736 sat radio tonight.. I haven't bought a SDR package yet, but this is awesome :)
