Doom On: Lake Mead Down To 39% Full
About empty

"The days of millions of Sin City residents and visitors who love swimming in, boating on, and drinking water siphoned from Lake Mead could be numbered. After 14 years of drought in the Southwest, the water reservoir created by the Hoover Dam has officially dipped to its lowest water level since it began filling up with water from the Colorado River in the 1930s.

On Sunday, the lake’s water level dropped to 1,081.7 feet above sea level, leaving the reservoir only 39 percent full. The body of water hasn’t been full since 1998, when it was about 1,296 feet above sea level. As the hot, dry summer months continue, the water level is expected to recede even more.

"It's time for us to wake up. If this drought continues, we're going to be in a terrible situation within the next 12–24 months," Jay Famiglietti, senior water scientist at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, told The Desert Sun.

"e white band left on the lake's rocky banks by minerals in the receding water now stretches more than 130 feet below a high-water mark last reached in 2000. And as the reservoir continues to ebb, water managers from across the region have begun negotiating steps they could take jointly to avert a serious shortage that would trigger cutbacks in water deliveries to Arizona, Nevada and Mexico."

double doom on

"But the water level of Lake Mead behind the dam that straddles Arizona and Nevada has been in a steady decline and is already affecting electricity production at the man-made wonder, which was both the largest concrete structure ever built and the largest hydro plant in the world when it was turned on in 1936.

As a result, each of the power plant's 17 generating units with a nameplate capacity of 2,074 megawatts was derated in June; the current capacity is 1,592 MW and is projected to decline later this year. So the dam mostly provides power only during periods of peak demand, according to Mark Cook, engineering group supervisor at the Hoover Dam. "We pretty much shut down at night.

And Vegas is a particularly bad place for water wasting and over-consumption. Between the hotels that wash hundreds of thousands of sheets each day and visitors and residents flushing toilets, taking showers, etc combined with the large pools and decorative fountains like the one at the Bellagio, much water is used and wasted each day.

That might help, but the overall water consumption in Vegas is a much much larger issue.

Re: Doom On: Lake Mead Down To 39% Full
nothing to see here, not to mention only one of the two intake pumps is working which supplies water to the 2 million people who live here. These pumps are also known to fail from time to time, which is why there is two of them, well you can guess what happened to the intake of one of the pumps, its on dry earth now, and a new pump isn't scheduled to be complete for quite some years from now...

Vegas is a vortex, a valley designed to suck money back into the fed who control this state...

I was born here, but now Ive been thinking the weather in Seattle and colorado isn't so bad!

I bet all those advanced civilizations that left so much in the southwest thought the water would last forever, it looks like they had good climate for a long time, then bam, no more.

Being from vegas I know the simplest solution. That's have California get there grubby dick beaters out of our lake and open some desalination plans so they can drink there own water.

You know 90% of the water used for utilities in the hotels is recycled on site vegas is extremely water efficient, we are the ones feeling the effects of this drought and have made strides in water conservation technology. I don't think you should belittle las vegas's plight over a little fountain that also recycles its own water. California just needs to get there own water.

Wow. Sensitive much?

Where I am in California, we do have our own water. So please chill the fuck out. You whine, then accuse. Nice tactic.
