They did it while pretending to be separatists shooting at what they thought was a military jet.

Someone came up with this theory:

They plottet the flight path even though the corridor was declared closed airspace. As they approach Ukraine, they are like WTF and send 2 fighters up there, just to be sure. Then the rebels see this plane being "escorted" by 2 fighters and think "Look, this must be someone important on that plane, lets take it down". Boom.

I fucked up. Meant to include an option 'Separatists with Russian Blessing'.

Back in WW2 they were able to tell which plane was which from sillouettes. Nowadays they use transponder id and it's fairly easy even to the naked eye to determine if the jet flying above is a cargo plane or civilian. Someone fucked up big time. Putin is in the shit for being a moron and backing those he shouldn't have done. He will pay for his crimes one day, and so will the rest of the Russian people, even those who don't support him will be dragged down with him. Putins legacy will be death and destruction on such a massive scale that they'll be lucky to have at least ten percent of the Russian nation left alive.
