Bugging In
Relatively new here. Following Ebola from the beginning. I cannot believe it is here, and I can't believe how many mistakes are being made. Starting to really, and truly think about what I will do if this thing really starts spreading. Not full out panicking YET, but very watchful.
Bugging out isn't really an option. I think we would have to stay put. If anyone else out there is thinking the same thing, maybe we could all collaborate some? I have been trying to prep little by little for the past year. But, I'm sure there are things that I've overlooked. Scary times for sure.

Re: Bugging In
yea.... we are preparing to pull our daughter from school and bug in. Shes only in pre k so its no biggie. Haven't decided what to do about work yet but I figure getting the kid out of school is the most important. Right now I wish I would have spent less money on Guns/tactical items, and more on food and water... Might be eating a lot of Dove and Squirrel

It's probably nothing, millions die of the flu, etc, every year, or it could be all out Apocalypse, I don't know. There's not much you can do except have some food stuffs and cash stored to get you through a few months in case we have to bar ourselves up in our homes for a while, also make sure we are in a state of sanctifying grace, free from all mortal sin. God Speed to you dear Op and all others....

Re: Bugging In
Some things to consider if you plan on staying put.

There is always a chance of -
no running water
no electricity
vandals and those seeking to take what you have
and then there are the crazies that would be a wildcard

In addition -
if your whole neighborhood, block, town or city was under lockdown there would be no deliveries of food/water, firewood, etc... (meaning goods) and likely guarded exit/entry points. (meaning you would not be able to leave)

Just things to think about.

There comes a point where you have to decide to stay or go. Be sure to be ready for either situation. Know that if you leave after things are on lockdown you may not get far by conventional methods. You may consider alternate routes and alternate modes of transportation - as in walking.

If you have food, water and a heat source it's a start.
Medical supplies, communications and means of defense are important as well.
Items for trade will be more valuable than cash. Know your neighbors, have a plan, a back up plan and a back up for that one too.
The end is just the beginning.

Bug in if you live in the country. If you live in the city/suburbs, think about what your breaking point would be to bug out. Look and print maps. Dont rely on the internet to be up forever. Make plans now. This is the first time ever where I dont think over reacting is a bad thing.

Bugging OUT is NOT an option for contagious events!!

All that will do is spread the disease.

Buggin IN doesn't take as much prep. Most people already are prepped to some extent if they live in areas that get extreme weather. We just have to get a few more weeks of supplies than the typical one or two weeks.

For winter areas - the biggest concern is heat. If you have a gas stove, that's not to much of an issue. A blanket over the doorway and hunker down in the kitchen with the oven on. For those of us with electric stoves & electric heat - lots of blankets. Old fashioned kerosene/oil lamps can offer up some heat, as well as candles - just be careful to not set anything on fire.

Get some tension curtain rods and using heavy curtains or blankets...even plastic - close off archways between rooms. Creating a small buffer room with them between an outdoor entrance and the living space really helps preserve heat (this is practical even when it's brutal cold and you have working heat). Cover all your windows in plastic - inexpensive and practical even with no doom. But in doom - your goal is to keep one room as warm as possible.

If you get warning that the power will be out or just suspect it's a possibility - fill the tub and sinks and containers with water. This is critical if you live in an apartment that uses electric pumps to get the water to you. Tub & sink water can used for flushing. The more water you prep for both flushing and drinking - the better.

Other thing would be canned foods. You'll want things that don't need cooking if you rely on electric stoves. Canned veggies and those things like chef boy-r-dee and baked beans - are already cooked and can be eaten right from the can or just warmed over a candle.

If it's cold enough outside, you can move your freezer items into a cooler and stash them outside. Refrigerator items can be kept pretty cold stashed on window sills or against patio doors.

Don't forget toilet paper and your pets food! Also spray shampoo and baby/body wipes - remember no electric usually means no hot water.

People in houses have a lot more options than apartment dwellers for storage and cooking options. So we'll need to plan a bit differently.

BOOKS! Lots and lots of BOOKS!!

And a couple of old fashioned decks of cards and the book by Hoyle will keep people occupied for hours and can be played on a bed.

Also a dyno powered radio to keep up on news and such.

Which reminds me - I have to get batteries and find the charger for mine. Which is also why I have the dyno - because I never remember those things.

We were down for 3 days when Sandy blew through. The radio also has an LED flashlight...it was the most used item.

Now if they'd just invent a dyno powered electric blanket?

And how do you KNOW you're not infected?

And if you leave, you're exposing yourself to becoming infected along the way.

And you are contagious and you leave - you're spreading the disease. If you become infected along the way - you're spreading the disease.

For contagions - you STAY PUT! PERIOD!

With disease it's not all about YOU or you family - it's about responsibility to all your fellow humans.

We wouldn't even be having this discussion if the guy from Liberia had stayed put. It wouldn't be spreading in Africa if people hadn't tried to run away from it.

Do NOT be the murderer! STAY HOME!

Indeed. ^ From what I've read around the net over the past 3 years, most prepping seems to have been done for martial law, economic collapse, a grid shut down, terrorist bombings, etc - pandemic doom sucks.

I seem to remember reading that fish antibiotic, purchased at pet stores, is effective and safe for humans. Anyone know if this is true?

A Fish Antibiotics Facts and Information-

Fish Antibiotics Forms and Strengths.

Antibiotics in tablets or capsules- The same USP grade antibiotics produced by companies that also produce antibiotics for human use. Each tablet or capsule is labeled, imprinted, and often color coded with a special code that can be used to identify the type and strength of the antibiotics by doing a simple web search and comparison. Most all antibiotic tablets or capsules come in either 250mg or 500mg strengths and are for use in ornamental or pet fish.

Good morning! Wow :) Thanks for all the input. A radio....I need to get a radio. Can anyone recommend one?
Also we rely on electric heat so blocking off rooms is another good idea. I wish we had a wood stove.
Lastly I remember reading someones post on here a few months ago, but I can't recall where it is. They talked about covering most of the windows with plywood to help keep intruders out. Anyone remember which post?

Re: Bugging In
with the new revelations that Ebola hasn't raged in Africa because it is too hot and humid there...

and that the regular flu season happens in fall-winter because the flu virus can't survive in warm weather

and that Ebola is about 100% likely to follow the same model as common flu....

(in colder climates it will survive AIRBORNE)
this year it won't be the 'flue seaon' it will be the EBOLA season.

not sure how this will play out.

if i were in the city , I would be drawing a plan to get to relatives in the country if it spreads like the flu.

food and fuel will come to a stop.

this thing just might ravage the country this winter.

as christ said. "I would tell them to get out of the cities"

Re: Bugging In
Bugging in- I think it's important to have an alternate way to cook- a charcoal bbq or dig a hole, put rocks around it and have a bbq grate to put across the rocks. I have a few cast iron pots and pans- don't forget you need some sort of fat to cook with. I like olive oil, but peanut oil might be better for high heat. Print out alternative info on collecting water, so before you run out, you will know how to collect it and keep it safe for drinking. Bleach- there are bleach tablet I found at the store (they need water thought- duh), all the bleach now is stronger, so know how much to mix in with water, etc. Good old fashioned flour, sugar, baking powder, etc is important to have on hand too. Get as many months worth of your meds as you can. My mom found out that if you are in Wally World, they only give one months worth now (just started), but the pharmacist told her she can come back the next day and get another months worth.

I always learn the most on these threads- great thinkers on here. Thanks for starting it. hf
