In '84 Witten figures out that super-dense or super-stable matter may exist. de Rujula and Glashow surmise that same year that if it does, in fact, exist random clumps of it may encounter and pass through earth(as Cosmic Rays do all the time). But since this strange/quark matter is no simple Alpha particle - it has punch - and if even small bits hit earth should leave a certain seismic "fingerprint" detectable by seismometers. So they surveyed found over 1 million reports of seismic anomalies- in that these "earthquakes" had no association with a known epicenter. Significantly, in October and November of 1993, they found two events that match the "fingerprints" Scientists predict would occur. |
