Stone Mountain is a giant rock sticking up 825 feet above the Georgia countryside, the sight of a Civil War battle during The Atlanta Campaign. It is home to the largest high relief sculpture in the world, carved by Gutzon Borglum (The Carver of the Mount Rushmore Monument). The Confederate Memorial Carving, depicts three Confederate heroes of the Civil War, President Jefferson Davis and Generals Robert E. Lee and Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. The entire carved surface measures three-acres, larger than a football field and Mount Rushmore. The carving of the three men towers 400 feet above the ground, measures 90 by 190 feet, and is recessed 42 feet into the mountain. When I was a kid you could drive right up to the granite and then park and walk up. A lot of folks would actually drive up to the top and sometimes they ventured into the clutches of gravity, usually fatally. Can't do that any more. My father stole a cactus plant from the mountain and planted it in our yard and it spread much to the vexation of my mother. The mountain itself was not a civil war battle site, but the village below was. The Venables were just KKK and that's all there is about that. . |
