Thread: Super-strains of lice spread to 25 states: Are they in yours?

A few years back, an article helped alot of folks. I will share 100 percent of that article here, as I am the author of that article.

How To Get Rid of Lice NOW!

I had a friend whose son was going to head start school. One day, the school nurse called her to pick up her son from school. The nurse told her the reason why. When she did an inspection of the students, several of them had lice, and my friends’ son was one of them. The nurse gave my friend a small slip of paper that listed lice removal products that could be purchased over the counter. The nurse also mentioned that how my friends’ son got the lice was from the winter coats the students wore that hung on the rack with all the other coats together. The nurse noticed the fur collar on another students coat had a lot of lice still on it. Lice do travel.

After using one of the products on the list, the boy was treated easily, and the lice never came back. One main reason why the lice did not return is because he had very short hair. The eggs are usually glued to the hair shaft starting from about a quarter of an inch and longer. All my friend knew at that time was the problem with lice was a unfortunate one-time thing. Later, she realized the ease of removing lice did not apply to people with much longer hair. When her daughter came home with lice, that is when the nightmare began, not once, but repeatedly over a period of about a year.

She had spent literally hundreds of dollars on every lice removing product she could get. Even her daughters doctor prescribed medications to try. She washed ALL bedding, clothes in closet, cleaned floors, etc. to no avail. She was exhausted standing countless hours hand combing nits out of her daughters very long, thick, hair. For about a year, this process became so overwhelming, that she decided to cut her daughters hair as short as possible, but, before they were to go, she wanted to see if there was ANYTHING else out there that she had not tried yet.

In her research, she discovered that she was not the only one having the very same problem of lice returning repeatedly. There were posts out on the internet from folks who were angry, overwhelmed and at their wits end. Not knowing what else to do, she called me, and opened up about her dilemma. I told her to try vinegar. I used vinegar for so many things, and vinegar may cut the adhesive that the louse uses to attach the egg to the hair.

After listening to my suggestions, she decided to give it one last try, and if that didn’t work, then off to the salon they would have to go. The next morning, she laid her daughter on the kitchen table with cushions for her daughters’ comfort. At the end of the table, she placed a stool with a large metal mixing bowl on top of it. Set within reach two lice combs (she had PLENTY from the previously purchased kits), and had a good sized plastic tumbler cup (for pouring the vinegar). She took a gallon of vinegar and poured about two cups into the large metal bowl, and then added about one cup of water.

When ready, she had her daughter scoot her head to the very edge of the table with a rolled towel under her neck for comfort. Then, she began pouring cups of the vinegar solution onto her daughters’ hair. She kept doing this for about 20 minutes continuously. Then, she began dipping a lice comb into the vinegar mixture, and combed her daughters’ hair. She was beginning to see many eggs accumulating in the bottom of the bowl. Though most people are disgusted even at the thought of lice, when she was done combing and saw the UNBELIEVABLE number of eggs in the bottom of that bowl, she was embarrassed. I told her that seeing all those eggs meant results, and she wanted to jump for joy. The approximate total time she stood there rinsing and then combing as her daughter lay on the table, was 45 minutes. After she towel dried the hair, leaving the hair still damp, she invested about thirty minutes more to do another thorough comb-through.

A couple things that a person would need to use care on, is to avoid getting the vinegar on the edges of the face. Her daughters’ temples were slightly red because the vinegar irritated the skin. Also, when a person has lice, they will have the tendency to scratch the bites, and when the vinegar gets on those surfaces (small sores), there will be a sting, but only momentarily.

I was glad to be there to witness the great results the vinegar idea brought. In my honest opinion, this method by far worked wonders. Many folks have discovered the hard and expensive way that those lice removal companies made huge bucks off of them. The main reason why lice kept coming back was because the glue that attaches the nits to the hair was not removed, and then later, the nits hatched and the life-cycle process began over and over again. All it takes is just a few eggs that were not removed, and with enough time, there would be lice again as if from out of nowhere.

I would like to point out that lice can happen to anyone, and it does not matter if you are rich, poor, clean or dirty. To any parasite such as lice, a host is a host, no matter how young or old the person may be. Even a pet can get lice from somewhere, and after it lays in your bed or furniture, you can discover lice after awhile. So, rather than look down upon someone who has lice, it would be better to realize what trouble that person has to go through, especially if their previous attempts to remove lice failed. Be compassionate, and share the information of what vinegar has done for some folks, and you will feel good knowing that someone with lice can finally live normal again.

All I can say is that I am so happy that my friend didn’t give up in the fight against lice. I just wish she told me about her dilemma much sooner. It is nothing to be ashamed of, as lice can happen to anyone. By the way, it has been about three years since she used the vinegar treatment, and her daughter has not showed up with any lice since. Amen to that (and of course, vinegar).

Good article, but lice actually do not commonly "travel." They cannot jump or fly. Transmission occurs from head to head contact but very rarely from just close contact, even a jacket.
Lice need a blood supply to survive. If they do not get human scalp blood they will die within 24 hours. And many of the over the counter herbal lice treatments kill not only the adult head lice, but all 3 stages of the nymphs, as well as the nits (eggs), so even if you do not get every single nit/egg off the hair, if you use a product that specifies that it also kills the nits and if you follow the directions, one application may be all you need, though reapplying after 7-10 days is better
Also, obsessive washing of bedding linens towels clothing hats etc is unnecessary. Head lice are very susceptible to heat. Just throw that stuff into your dryer on its highest heat setting and run it for 20-40 minutes. It will kill any lice nymphs larvae and eggs. Anything that cannot be dried on high heat you should place into a plastic bag, seal it, and set it aside for at least 24 hours, but if you're really concerned or fearful of reinfestation from the items (which is still uncommon) go ahead and leave it sealed for a few more days or a week.

The vinegar idea sounds like it could work. Some people also recommend slathering hair in olive oil or extra virgin coconut oil, and then bagging or plastic wrapping the head overnight, then rinsing in the morning first with dish soap/shampoo mixture (to cut the oil) then rinsing with regular white or apple cider vinegar, then combing to remove lice and nits then rerinsing with vinegar. I've also seen suggested to slather hair in a high alcohol content hair styling gel and bagging or wrapping the head overnight, then rinsing with vinegar, combing, rerinse.

I'm a teacher with kids of my own. Been there, done that.

I've found that yellow Listerine (actually the generic Walmart/grocery yellow is fine) works well to kill the buggers. Soak the hair and put a shower cap in for 30 minutes.

Then, rinse out the mouthwash and put in coconut conditioner. Rinse out the shower cap and leave in for 30 minutes. The coconut conditioner losens the eggs attached to the hair and makes the hair slick enough to allow them to wash out.

My stepdaughter has hair to her waist and cutting it off was not an option.

Keep using the coconut conditioner (though I add an additional 2-3 tbs of coconut oil to a full bottle when new). Supposedly there is something I the coconut that lie don't like beyond the inability to attach eggs.

Have not had a problem in almost 5 years doing this.

Also, warn your kids against pressing their heads together for selfies. Evidently there is research saying that this is fueling lice infestations among teens.

Re: If you have lice, read this, it can help.
Though rare, we ended up with re-infestation. Not on all of us, just our daughter, and she was not around any animals or anything to keep being in contact. After trying the lice shampoos for lice AND nits, combing all the eggs we could find out of her hair, several weeks later, they showed up again. Those products, no matter how you follow the directions do not work sometimes for some people. I even looked in forums which many folks said the very same thing. If just a few nits have not been combed out, there is a possibility of them hatching and starting up the population again. Keep in mind, my daughter had very long, thick hair, and I worked so hard trying everything I could to stop the lice. Finally, used the vinegar and it worked. The most important part of that was the vinegar loosened up the adhesive that sticks the eggs to the hairs.

And since then, haven't had the lice come back. Considering the money I had to keep paying to buy and try all those OTC lice treatments, that DID NOT work, the vinegar worked wonders.

Lice MD. Do it everyday for a week, but don’t forget to wash everything, spray, and vacuum.

[link to www.amazon.com (secure)]

I didn’t even need to remove the nits...which is darn near impossible on your own head. :)

And don’t be mad at the other parents. It can be darn hard to get rid of this suckers. Maybe offer all these tips to the school nurse to send home with the kids.

Diatomaceous earth is less smelly, easier to apply and effective on a wide range of mite/insect/worm conditions:

From: [link to www.denz.co.nz]

"We have 92 [horse] riders over a 4 day week for riding sessions and they all use the same helmets and boots. The problem of head lice with this number of riders has been a hard one to solve, and all the available chemical products are very expensive.

We were asked to trial this product for the whole of Term 2. We have used a sprinkler to cover the inside of the helmets and boots and there has been an amazing result... NO headlice or smelly boots right from the start.

Tea tree oil works! Store bought stuff does not work. Tea tree oil and religious combing to get out the nits is what works. You have to learn the life cycle of the lice. They hatch from an egg every 4 days or so. Comb out eggs everyday then treat with tea tree oil just in case every 4 days to kill newly hatched eggs. They cannot start laying eggs for another 1-2 days. Do this for 2 weeks, none will be left behind. Plus lice do not live for more than a few hours off of a host.

Many years ago my kids got the medical shampoo resistant ones. Nothing the doctor gave us or what we could buy at the store would kill them, even all the home remedies. Same problem for the other parents. We all had a meeting and got some stuff from Canada that worked and shared it with all the other parents, because you get your kid cleared and they get it back if you do get the entire school. The kids had daily head checks and sent home if they had one nit. It was a nightmare that took a year to clear up. Community effort is important.

So if you have tried everything, you might have a resistant strain of lice.

From the link I shared earlier:

"I have been using it for my chickens and dogs. I have 26 free ranging hens and each morning I have mixed 1 heaped tablespoon of DE through their wheat pellets, also sprinkling some over their greens. I was totally amazed at the difference I saw just within a week of using it. My egg production increased from barely getting a dozen eggs a day, to getting either 22 or 24 eggs a day. All of my hens are over 2 years old, so this is really amazing. I also sprinkled DE in their sawdust floor covering and nesting boxes and on their perches. I noticed the difference in literally just a few days in the scale on their legs and the lice that they had in their feathers. It had improved drastically. Also, over a few weeks their feathers looked healthier, their eyes brighter."
