IF you are on FOB ( forward Operating Base ). We have these "blimps" positioned around the FOB to look out around the base to spot any threats or if anyone is digging in the roads out and around the base planting IEDS. They also look in on the base to spot threats. They are called Ptds. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70008973 He's right about he's saying here. But This is a totally different operating platform. It's used for cruise missile defense. It is there to protect Washington DC. So is DC more at risk now? Was this deliberate? |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 67046660 United States 10/28/2015 11:50 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hey, idiots.... The BLIMP does not cost $2.7 billion. That is the budget of the entire program. And under this entire program, these AEROSTATS are used on the U.S.-Mexico border, down in the Caribbean, in Iraq and Afghanistan and elsewhere. This budget also covers pricey R&D. Get your facts straight. |

SaveUSa User ID: 68999897 United States 10/29/2015 09:01 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | $2.7 Billion? How in the fuck do you spend $2.7 billion on a friggin blimp (or anything for that matter), and not have a method to control it remotely? Sounds like another government boondoggle BS project. Betting 90% of those funds ended up somewhere in Syria. Within the surreal depths of "reality" lies the truth. |

If so much R&D, how do you lose a friggin blimp at any cost, when remote controlled propulsion would be the least expensive aspect of same? So, how much do these blimps cost to produce? Anonymous Coward User ID: 54153621 United States 10/29/2015 09:51 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | JLENS System 1/5/15 Total Cost - Life of Program (LoP): The total procurement cost of the JLENS program is $0.00 billion (official DoD estimate) + $2.55 billion in research and development (RDT&E) funds, which means the total estimated program cost is $2.55 billion (numbers are aggregated annual funds spent over the life of the program and no price/inflation adjustment was made). This figure excludes military construction (MILCON) costs in support of the program in the amount of $40.9 million. [link to www.bga-aeroweb.com (secure)] ---- Doesn't give price per unit, just the whole package deal. |

It has been going through a test phase at another location for years. Once it proved itself. The program was moved to maryland to protect DC. Was this deliberate? the loss of the aerostat? In no way. These things are designed to withstand alot of weather but you also have to use your head. hint hint!! |

It very cost effective. |
