Breaking: BIGGEST HURRICANE ON RECORD - CAT 4 - IN THE ARABIAN SEA POISED TO HIT YEMEN
Cyclone Chapala became the strongest tropical system so far south in the Arabian Sea on record and may make an extremely rare landfall at hurricane strength along the coast of war-torn Yemen Monday or Tuesday. While wind damage will be a threat near the point of landfall, the bigger concern will be extremely heavy rainfall in a normally arid region, leading to life-threatening flash floods in a country already suffering a major humanitarian crisis stemming from years of violent conflict.

Chapala weakened slightly to a Category 3 equivalent storm on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale on Sunday morning (mainland U.S. time). It had rapidly intensified to a high-end Category 4 early Friday and remained in that Category through most of Saturday.

Satellite imagery Saturday showed a still-impressive eyewall with a tiny eye only about nine miles wide, roughly the size of Hurricane Patricia, which became the most intense hurricane of record in the western hemisphere roughly a week ago.

While direct measurements from reconnaissance aircraft are not available over the Arabian Sea, Chapala's rate of intensification from a high-end tropical storm to a high-end Category 4 storm in 24 hours ending 2 a.m. EDT Friday morning was quite impressive for this part of the world.

That storm will produce very heavy rainfall...mudslides...wind damage...

Gonna be bad...very bad.

Rivers running from these mountains that are normally dry or feature very low flow would see rapid rises with rainfall of this magnitude. Destructive and deadly mudslides, debris flows, and flash flooding is likely immediately before, and sometime after landfall of Chapala in central and eastern Yemen.

In short, Chapala may be one of Yemen's costliest natural disasters on record.

We may never know, however, exactly how much rain falls or how strong the winds blow as Chapala makes landfall. Yemen has been beset by violent conflict in recent years, disrupting the electrical grid and communication networks across the country. As a result, weather observations most of us take for granted are nearly non-existent.

WOW.

Very strange weather for that part of the world.

I feel bad for the yachties making passages through the area, in part,
because there are few places in the area outside of Oman where westerners
can make a port call to wait out a storm.

And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?

And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?

And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?

After hurricane Patricia being one of the strongest to make landfall in the pacific ocean, and before that reaching the strongest sustained winds ever recorded, plus gusts over 400km/ph...now this RARE cyclone, about to make landfall in yemen, just a couple of weeks later....THE FUCK IS GOING ON!???
