Another earthquake shakes southern Kansas

"For the second time in three days, southern Kansas was rattled by an earthquake.

The USGS reports a 4.0 magnitude earthquake was centered near Medford, OK around 8:15 this evening."

I guess they later downgraded it to a 3.7.

Kansans can expect more strong shaking after 5.8, 5.0 earthquakes

"Kansans can expect more strong shaking following a series of large earthquakes in the region. A 5.8 magnitude earthquake centered near Pawnee, Oklahoma in September remains the largest in the region's history. Just two months later a 5.0 rocked the area and the U.S. Geological Survey expects the trend to continue.

In 2016, the USGS gave southern Kansas and central Oklahoma a 10 percent chance of strong shaking. That percentage will increase following several five-plus magnitude quakes in the area. There's also a chance the earthquakes will get stronger. But pinpointing a time and place is impossible."

Meanwhile, there are no earthquakes from the NC OK/SC KS area since my last post. I have voiced concerns previously that when we see a prolonged period without earthquakes, we tend to have a large earthquake.

Interestingly, the 11/16 2.5 out of Anthony, Kansas, was not showing yesterday, 11/17, when I did my standard search. It took quite a while for it to show up. It just makes me wonder how many other earthquakes are not getting reported timely. As you can see from this screenshot below, it was not showing up as of 6:35 p.m. on 11/17/16:

Pawnee Nation lawsuit asks that drilling permits be voided

"The Pawnee Nation of Oklahoma has filed a lawsuit against the federal government to void drilling permits for oil and natural gas wells on tribal land that the tribe alleges cause earthquakes in northern Oklahoma.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Tulsa on Friday, a day after Pawnee residents filed a separate lawsuit in state court against 27 companies they allege operate wastewater injection wells although they know the method causes earthquakes, the Tulsa World reported.

The federal lawsuit claims drilling permits and leases on tribal-owned lands held in trust have been improperly approved by the Interior Department, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

'In doing so, BIA and BLM also have run roughshod over Pawnee natural resource protection laws, disregarded a tribal moratorium on new oil and gas approvals, and violated the agencies’ trust responsibilities to the Pawnee,' the lawsuit alleges.

The approval of the challenged oil and gas drilling permits has occurred despite an October 2015 tribal ban on new wells in Payne and Pawnee counties, the lawsuit states."

Our local news has been telling us all Month that, since we have cut down on the hundreds of small quakes, that the ones we do get will be bigger.
Preparing us for that 7.0 in the future.

If OK shakes like Japan did the other day, everything in the State will fall over.

The thing is that I'm not seeing a decrease in the smaller quakes from my daily observations.

I agree a big quake in this part of the country would be absolutely devastating. Nothing has been built to earthquake standards.

They Do seem to be moving, though, as they shut down some disposal wells and open up new ones.
They have even started in Western OK, which NEVER gets earthquakes, such as Thomas, OK.

They had a local news item that quickly disappeared stating that it was impossible under the law to regulate these industries, at least in OK--except maybe for the Tribes.

I am still uncertain whether this new swarming area in NC Kansas is related to the traditional SC Kansas/NC Oklahoma area that I monitor. As such, I am going to go ahead and post this latest earthquake from the NC Kansas area here:

There are no earthquakes from the traditional SC Kansas/NC Oklahoma area since my last post.

With this NC Kansas area having only 1 earthquake in the last 10 years prior to this latest development in the area and only 20 earthquakes total for the last 100 years for the area, I found the theory contained in this thread to be quite interesting due to the fact that a wind farm in the area did go into operation just prior to this latest swarm, having gone almost 10 years without an earthquake in the area and having only had 17 earthquakes in the 100 years prior to the wind farm going into operation, despite the controversial nature of the theory:

Apparently, the 3.9 earthquake on 12/4/16 at 21:22 east of Pawnee was downgraded from a 4.2:

"A 4.2 magnitude earthquake was felt at 9:22pm. It was centered 8 miles east of Pawnee OK."

He's predicting a bigger earthquake for the Oklahoma area in the coming days.

There are no earthquakes since my last post, so I am a little worried he could be right. I have noticed trends of no earthquakes for 24-48 hours before larger earthquakes. We are now going on 59 hours without an earthquake.

I hope that it doesn't mean a big one is coming. I know that they have claimed lately that the earthquakes are quieting down with the shutdown of the wells, but I have been skeptical of this claim up until now.

I guess we will see what the future holds.

While preparing the information for this post for the year 2016, I noted an interesting development. While creating this post, I just clicked on the links in the OP for the statistics for the year 2015 and just changed the year in the search parameters from 2015 to 2016.

In doing so, I noted a discrepancy in the totals for the year 2015 from when I first did the search on February 4, 2016. As you can see from the screenshots contained in the OP on that date, I had the following numbers listed:

I discovered a cool little map today. You can overlay earthquakes over a map that shows the wastewater disposal wells. When you zoom into the map, you will see that very few of these earthquakes are occurring at the actual site that the well is located.

I would think if the well was responsible for the earthquake, then you would see the earthquake occurring right over the actual well.
