No it wasn't, but was louder than usual this time. Also earlier in the day than usual.

I lived near airbases.

If it sounds like one jet but is LONG and LOUD, it is multiples taking off one after the other. Probably after burn takeoffs if the jet is fully loaded with ordinance.

I remember watching evenings when Oceana NAS would scramble jet after jet after jet. This was during the first Gulf War.

Yup, one really long really loud one, maybe 15 minutes. Usually they are short and only like a few seconds or so.

I am 99.9% sure you heard a series of hard take offs.

They were all lined up and 1 will take off, then just as the one jet lifts from the runway, 1 more throttles up and tales off. Again, just as that jet lifts off the runway, another one throttles up.

The military does practice putting as many jets in the air as possible every so often.

It results in a LONG drawn out rumble that sounds just like one jet but over a long period and is noticeably louder.

Interesting, thanks for the great explanation. I've never heard that before. I love sky watching aircraft. I saw a bunch of Chinooks the other day for the first time, I did a thread on that too, guess you could call me a sky-tard LOL.
