Dawn probe descends to LAMO over Ceres THIS WEEK!! will humanity finally discover the true nature of the bright spots of Ceres??!!
Dec 04, 2015

Soaring on a blue-green beam of high-velocity xenon ions, Dawn is making excellent progress as it spirals closer and closer to Ceres, the first dwarf planet discovered. Meanwhile, scientists are progressing in analyzing the tremendous volume of pictures and other data the probe has already sent to Earth.

Dawn's spiral descent from its third mapping orbit (HAMO), at 915 miles (1,470 kilometers), to its fourth (LAMO), at 240 miles (385 kilometers). The two mapping orbits are shown in green. The color of Dawn's trajectory progresses through the spectrum from blue, when it began ion-thrusting in HAMO, to red, when it arrives in LAMO. The red dashed sections show where Dawn is coasting for telecommunications.

It requires 118 spiral revolutions around Ceres to reach the low altitude (and additional revolutions to prepare for and conduct the trajectory correction maneuver described below). Compare this to the previous spiral. (Readers with total recall will note that this is fewer loops than illustrated last year. The flight team has made several improvements in the complex design since then, shortening the time required and thus allowing more time for observing Ceres.)

Dawn is flying down to an average altitude of about 240 miles (385 kilometers), where it will conduct wide-ranging investigations with its suite of scientific instruments. The spacecraft will be even closer to the rocky, icy ground than the International Space Station is to Earth's surface. The pictures will be four times sharper than the best it has yet taken.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft is currently on its way from High Altitude Mapping Orbit (HAMO), at 1,470 km, to Low Altitude Mapping Orbit (LAMO), at 385 km above Ceres. When it arrives, it will offer us new, incredibly detailed pictures of the surface. It will also give us our closest look at the mysterious bright spots in Occator crater.

Dawn is slated to arrive at LAMO by mid-December.

When Dawn arrives at LAMO it will be the end of an eight year interplanetary voyage that began with a blastoff on September 27, 2007 by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Delta II Heavy rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

LAMO marks Dawn’s fourth, lowest and final science orbit at Ceres where the highest resolution observations will be gathered and images from the framing camera will achieve a resolution of 120 feet (35 meters) per pixel.

The spacecraft completes each revolution in 5.5 hours, and Ceres rotates in 9.1 hours, so Dawn will be able to view the entire surface. Credit: NASA/JPL

At LAMO, researchers hope to finally resolve the enduring mystery of the nature of the bright spots that have intrigued science and the general public since they were first glimpsed clearly early this year as Dawn was on its final approach to Ceres.

No because they will only have low res photos for some obscure reason and say they can't see anything while the guys are in the dark room air brushing out the culprit.

Re: Dawn probe descends to LAMO over Ceres THIS WEEK!! will humanity finally discover the true nature of the bright spots of Ceres??!!
It has been long theorized that Ceres has an internal ocean. Thus, from a thin crust point possibly liquid salt water escapes near the surface of a deep crater, if some water escapes (possibly salt water) would it not likely flash freeze and sublimate quickly? This may possibly leave a build up of salt and a small temporary haze. Both of which are being witnessed on Ceres. On earth this would not happen because the temperatures would not allow such a flash freeze and basically on the earth's surface this leaves the salt behind in the ocean and the ice becomes fresh water ice. However, when ocean water evaporates in shallow areas the salt is left behind similar to what might be occurring on Ceres but at drastically colder temperatures as sublimation and not evaporation.

Speaking of viruses, google "NASA zika virus" for interesting results. There used to be an extensive decontamination program for returning astronauts. What with the secret space programs bringing large numbers of astronauts to and from space, has this decontamination procedure been left by the wayside? What kind of diseases have been brought back from space? Would we even be told? What the zika! One thing is for sure, NASA ain't sayin!
