Cumbre Vieja (Spanish: Old Summit) is an active although dormant volcanic ridge on the volcanic ocean island of Isla de La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain, that erupted twice in the 20th century – in 1949, and again in 1971.

The ridge of the Cumbre Vieja trends in an approximate north-south direction and covers the southern two-thirds of the island. Several volcanic craters are located on the summit ridge and flanks.

One of several avalanches/rockslides happening today.

This one in Spain:

[link to hisz.rsoe.hu]

Excerpt:

Spanish officials say at least 180 people have been evacuated in the northern coastal city of Ondarroa after days of heavy rain caused a rock cliff to partially collapse, threatening a row of newly built apartment buildings. Mayor Zubeltz Bedialauneta says experts had warned that a rocky cliff behind the new apartments had shown slippage after nearly a week of heavy downpours and it finally began to give way on Friday afternoon.

He says the local government decided to evacuate residents Saturday after boulders struck the rear of the buildings. He says there's still a danger that the rest of the cliff could collapse onto the apartments. City spokeswoman Leire Beitia says the latest tests showed "the state of the cliff face has worsened alarmingly."

Large earthquakes throughout the Mediterranean region have also been known to produce significant and damaging tsunamis. One of the more prominent historical earthquakes within the region is the Lisbon earthquake of November 1, 1755, whose magnitude has been estimated from non-instrumental data to be about 8.0. The 1755 Lisbon earthquake is thought to have occurred within or near the Azores-Gibraltar transform fault, which defines the boundary between the African and Eurasian plates off the west coast of Morocco and Portugal
