A brush fire burning north of Ventura has scorched 40 acres and is threatening structures on Thursday afternoon, Ventura County Fire Department Captain Mike Lindbery said.

Flames were spreading at a rapid rate in the area of North Ventura Avenue and Casitas Vista Road, which is off of Highway 33, according to the Fire Department.

The blaze was roughly a quarter-acre when it was first reported about 2:10 p.m., Lindbery tweeted. Less than an hour later, it had grown to 40 acres and is “moving rapidly East to West.”

The fire appeared to be burning in a remote area, and it was unclear if any homes were nearby, video and photos from the scene showed.
