Officially Declared Native American, Kennewick Man Will Finally Get His Burial

One of the most important archaeological finds in all of North America, the Kennewick Man skeleton is remarkably complete. Dating back 9,000 years, the remains have offered insights to scientists since they were discovered in Washington in 1996.

But the Kennewick Man isn't just important to the study of anthropology. He's important to five Native American tribes claiming that the "Ancient One" is one of their ancestors. He deserves a Native American burial, they've argued for years.

In light of recent studies that have solidified DNA evidence, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officially declared that the Kennewick Man is, in fact, a Native American. That means the remains can be claimed and given a proper burial, according to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.
