A standard combat load for a soldier is around 250 rounds. He could have easily carried double that amount if he wanted too. During the Vietnam war LRRP teams on extended missions would often carry 500 plus rounds per team member. It was called going in " heavy". This idiot was on a one way mission. I'd be surprised if he went in " light".

Also, given the number of dead and the massive tissue damage, I'm thinking his gun was chambered in .300 blackout. It's a step above .556 and closer to 7.62x39 but with less recoil. It's more of an urban combat round. Not great beyond 300 meters but a monster up close.
