This hurricane will go all the way to Yosemite Wyoming and will trigger the Yellowstone super volcano eruption which will trigger a mega thrust earthquake in the Cascadia subduction zone which will result in the USA snapping in half at the New madrid fault line.
So... make sure you are prepared!

What is golden triangle?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73615824

Sorry, got busy at work.

Golden Triangle (Texas)
The Golden Triangle is an area of Southeast Texas between the cities of Beaumont, Port Arthur, and Orange. The "golden" refers to the wealth that came from the Spindletop oil strike in Beaumont in 1901.

The term more generally refers now to the entire Beaumont-Port Arthur-Orange metropolitan area, forming the triangle.

STOP SPREADING LIES... as a Galvestonian for many years we have seen this time and time again. This is nothing compared to hurricane Ike. Board up everything and get your supplies and wait! STOP PANICKING!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75419360

The eye of Ike went right over my house. The flooding on Galveston, Kemah and Boliver started way before the system ever came through and people got stuck due to flooding. I listened on the radio as people called in asking for help, but no one could come and rescue them because of flooding and winds. This was well before the surge came through.

I also was in The Great Rita Exodus. It took us all day to get from Houston to Austin. Everything was closed. Cars stalling and running out of gas. No restrooms. Crawling, inch by inch for hours and hours, bumper to bumper. If there had been flooding like is expected with the system, it would have been very bad news.

If you are in a low lying area, or on the coast, and you know you will need to evacuate...do it now. As other said, it's the water...not the wind that will be the killer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70557500

Rita was horrible. I remember my grandparents were stranded on I-45 and people were siphoning gas from cars stuck on the freeway. Rita was a epic!

If it had more time before making landfall I would agree, but Harvey is going to run out of time and open water. The rainfaill totals in some of the latest model runs are insane: some parts of the Texas coast will see several FEET of rain all at once.

Latest Euro *guidance* suggests wave heights exceeding 20ft close to the #Texas shore from #Harvey #tropics #AGwx

[link to pbs.twimg.com (secure)]

[link to twitter.com (secure)]
 Quoting: Simple27

This is very bad! Plus 4 and 6 feet of storm surge this means disaster!

 Quoting: Luisport

Those heights will push water across the island in many places! And the waves will certainly top the Galveston seawall. The main highway from Brownsville to Corpus is at sea level, at best. No more than a few miles from the actual Gulf. The roadways that offer evac will quickly become impassable, if not entirely blocked from slow traffic. I know they have evac plans in place, but they usually count on more than 2 days to move tourists as well as locals. And we all know what happens when they try to evac Houston...complete deadlock! I fear my state is in for a world of hurt!

GFS 12z outputs >50" in area of SE Texas --> inland flooding
Exact amount unknown but this ballpark extreme value rings alarm bells
[link to twitter.com (secure)]

 Quoting: Luisport

Alvin, which is 40 miles from Houston (SE), 30 miles from Galveston (W I think), and only 20 miles directly from Gulf, had 40" (officially) in 24 hours in 1979 when TS Claudette cam in. Most people will scoff at a prediction of 50", but IT COULD HAPPEN! We got a total of 48" in 36 hours - and they are saying Harvey could come in and park for at least that long!

I'd feel much better if the news started showing lines of traffic heading out of the area. If they wait til late Thurs or early Fri, it could be too late.

I have some family vacationing in Galveston right now. Should they GTFO?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 75326771

they need to watch yes , if I was there I would be gone by fri
 Quoting: Goofy for God

Limited routes out...probably lots of other vacationers leaving too...I'd leave by late Thurs. Don't want to be stuck in stopped traffic on an interstate in the midst of all the rain. Safer to err on the side of caution. Not likely the water in Galveston will be worth getting in by noon tomorrow - too rough, dirty and with risk of rip currents starting. If the winds start increasing, they close the bridges, too. Doesn't have to be real high wind, either.

Edit to add: sorry, don't mean to jack the thread! Just been there, done that. And I know too many people won't pay any attention to the warnings!! 1dunno11dunno1

I live in Pasadena,a city between Houston and Galveston . I posted a picture of me preparing sandbags (I need them to prevent water from getting into my laundry room, and sometimes the kitchen IF it rains alot) and people were joking at me that it's just a regular tropical storm and that it'll pass. I don't think people understand that this storm is going to stall in the Texas coastline for 3-4 days.

Checking in from The Woodlands. I went to the store today to get water and groceries. The store was crazy busy with people doing the same. It was nuts.

I sure hope this storm dissipates over the ocean.

I stand behind a category 3 hurricane at landfall.
I've been doing lots of reading on hurricanes that form inside the Gulf Of Mexico.
They can intensify very quickly. Very quickly.
I say Category 3 hurricane in the wee hours of Friday morning.
