Floods, avalanches kill scores of people in Afghanistan, Pakistan
02-Apr-07

FLOODS and avalanches killed scores of people in Afghanistan and Pakistan, officials said yesterday, as heavy rains destroyed villages, flooded farmland and drove hundreds from their homes.

At least 30 people died in the central Afghan province of Daikundi and seven in Herat, in the west, last Saturday. Another 11 died elsewhere in the country, government officials said.

"Six hundred people urgently need to be evacuated by air and are exposed to danger from rising waters in Uruzgan province," an Interior Ministry official said, referring to a southern district.

In neighbouring Pakistan, an avalanche killed at least 23 people last Saturday night and rescuers were struggling to find 15 more missing in a remote village of Turkoh in the Hindu Kush mountains of the Chitral region.

Hundreds of cattle also perished in the heaviest rains for years in drought-stricken Afghanistan. The floods inundated thousands of hectares of land and washed away or damaged key bridges around the country, including in the capital, Kabul.

The floods have also washed away part of a highway and a key bridge north of Kabul, cutting off links between the north and south of the country, residents said. Rains also caused avalanches and landslides in northeast Afghanistan, where nearly 20 people died last week.

Floods hit three districts in the northeastern province of Nuristan overnight and yesterday, swamping villages and washing away roads, provincial police chief General Aseel Totakhail told AFP.

"Sixteen people have died, seven others are wounded, dozens of houses have been destroyed. Villages have been cut off," he said.

Totakhail asked for urgent help from the government, the United Nations and foreign forces to evacuate people from the flood-affected area.

"Many people need to be air-lifted. Hundreds of families left homeless are in need of immediate help," he said.

Floods also affected the nearby eastern provinces of Kunar, Laghman and Nangarhar, causing damage to houses and farms but no human casualties were reported.

Across the border in Pakistan's Chitral region, senior police officer Ijaz Ahmed said some communities had been cut off for days due to landslides. "If it persists there could be food and medicine shortages in some remote areas," he said.

Matthew 24 is rolling out, moment by moment, day by day, month by month -- are we 'getting it yet' or are we blind to '....as in the days of Noah etc...'?

Ahem....I don't think you were being trolled, hun.
The above poster appeared to be making his own observation, of a connection between this event and end days of several holy books. Don't be so sensitive, hf

Thanks for the article.

erm, not sure what "trolling me" is but I think it's when one particular poster trespasses another particular poster sort of like a stalker. I stand to be corrected... just a guess.

I absolutely believe in God and the Last Day.

oh cheers, thankyou

great to hear about your knowing God and the End Times -- anyone with common sense had better start getting a lowdown on the end time events -- for their own sake.

cause if they dont -- well, nothings going to make sense as the Lord begins to shake things u[p.

all the atheists, mockers and the like can rant and rave all they want; when Revelation 6.19-end comes about -- they cant say they werent warned.

until then though, I pray for all who arent cool about the God thing -- after all, enemy or not -- plenty of room in heaven for all (our life in a blink of an eye -- eternity is a very long time to be separated from the Lord).

well thankyou, that sounded very sincere from your heart (then again Im a tad over perceptive at times)..

if your ever inquisitive ..not that I easily recommend sites on the web, two place I can advocate are

www.khouse.org

www.joycemeyer.org

both different, though we all need variety, different strokes for different folks as they say.

one website is excellent in current political/biblical/prophetic

the other, joyce's is the funniest, most relaxed preacher you'all ever listen to -- relates to every day people, who live every day life.

pity more churches didnt have this kind of preaching from the pulpit -- would certainly sweeten the sour faces Ive seen in God's house at times -- the 'religious' kind are only in need of a good enima -- to clean out the religious crap in them that the pharisee and legalist spirit within those type can be ripe and discourages people to ever return.

in 2007.. Amazing Grace will certainly tug the heartstrings of most people -- but 'religious pious people will never introduce the love of God'

He is a very funny loving Christ, just, says what He means, means what He says, fatherly Holy God.

Why cant we pursue to share that side of Christ with the world -- instead of beating up already wounded and hurting people with judgement and rules 'do it my way' eyes.

After all, us christians really need to always 'look at others ...with the Son in our eyes'.
