The Trump administration will declare a public health emergency to deal with the opioid epidemic Thursday, freeing up some resources for treatment. More than 140 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

President Trump is also expected to direct agency and department heads to use all appropriate emergency authorities to reduce number of deaths caused by the opioid crisis, according to senior administration officials.

I hope that when President Trump speaks of "opioids" he is careful to clearly establish that they are hardcore drugs like oxycontin and hydrocodone. Some people with limited exposure to the various pharmaceutical terms, for instance his large Evangelical base, might confuse "opioids" with "opium" which they then tend to incorrectly link with marijuana.

(This might also apply to stoners who don't read or listen all that carefully )

I wonder if Chris Christie will head a department in the administration as soon as next week when he is no longer governor of New Jersey. He's been doing a lot of advertising lately fighting drug addiction in NJ.

Sadly, you have a point. I have cancer as does my sister-in-law. Our cancer doctors are out of town and doctors can no longer call-in opioid prescriptions to your pharmacy. We have had to travel, in this rural state we live in, a 2 hour trip in snow storms just to pick up a prescription - and sign for it like a criminal - when we're already feeling like shit.

That's sort of ironic considering a few days ago someone on a Facebook group regarding addiction said they were asking Trump if they could come to the White House and talk to him about addiction and overdose. It has become the number one cause of death of young people in America and is out of control with the spread of fentanyl now into the heroin Supply.
