I forget the exact quote, but Col Fletcher Prouty once said that the biggest lie ever told about the CIA was that it was an intelligence organization.

I think he meant that the CIA is mostly involved in social engineering and controlling the population - of the U.S.!

The CIA was originally setup and signed into law by Truman as an intelligence analysis organization. It would take intelligence from the State Dept, Dept of War, etc and create a singular picture of the world and feed that back.

When Truman left office and saw that the CIA was hiring OSS operatives and becoming involved in clandestine operations he wrote an article in the Washington Post saying he would never have signed the bill allowing this.
