City report on Confederate monuments raises idea of renaming Austin, TX
Austin’s Equity Office suggested renaming the city in a report about existing Confederate monuments that was published this week.

Also on the list of locales to possibly be renamed: Pease Park, the Bouldin Creek neighborhood, Barton Springs and 10 streets named for William Barton, the “Daniel Boone of Texas,” who was a slave owner.

There is a plan to change the Alamo, even renaming it, and ultimately attempt to erase the Battle of the Alamo as the defining moment in the Franciscan mission’s existence.

Austin, TX is so garbage that Stone Cold left to go back to his hometown of Victoria. I mean, outside of “True Capitalist Radio”, what does Austin even have? SXSW is a garbage festival.

Re: City report on Confederate monuments raises idea of renaming Austin, TX
Here’s what the Austin Equity Office has to say about their own city. Not exactly Chamber or Commerce stuff from an official city organization, huh?

[link to www.austintexas.gov]

Austin has a long history of systemic racism and racial inequity that continues today. Throughout history, communities of color have been excluded, marginalized, and discriminated against as a result of City policies and practices. This history was reinforced by segregationist policies throughout the 20th century affecting a range of Austin venues, including schools, public parks, and commercial businesses, among others.

One of the most disheartening chapters of this legacy was the City of Austin’s Master Plan of 1928, which divided the City along racial lines by moving community services for African American and Hispanic/Latinx residents to East Austin. African-American and Hispanic Austinites who tried to settle in areas outside of the designated district were often denied access services such as utilities and public schools. Despite these challenges, communities of color in Austin thrived and developed strong, close knit, and vibrant communities.

While Austin was most recently recognized by US News and World Report as “The Best Place to Live in the U.S.,” the City consistently makes national lists as a city with severe inequality. In 1950, Austin was fourth in the country for the most income inequality. In 2015, the University of Toronto’s Martin Prosperity Institute listed Austin as the most economically segregated city in the country. Legacies of displacement by wealthier white Austinites and lack of access to opportunity for people of color have marked the city with continued racial disparities.

In an effort to address racial inequity in Austin, City Council passed Resolution No. 20150507-027 in 2015, which directed the City Manager to evaluate the impact of existing city policies and practices on racial equity and develop an Equity Assessment Tool that can be used across City departments during the budget process.

The Equity Office was created in 2016 to focus on advancing equity in all aspects of City operations. The first Chief Equity Officer, Brion Oaks, began this work in October 2016.

Re: City report on Confederate monuments raises idea of renaming Austin, TX
Of course people want plenty of changes, problem is they don't have to pay for what would need to be replaced. Taxpayers as well as both public and private entities would usually foot the bill.

These people intent on renaming things should be personally responsible for whatever costs are incurred such as stationary, letterheads, and all other signage. No doubt these many changes could cost millions if not more.

Bye bye, Austin City Limits, that popular Sunday night music program on NPR. Are they going to rename anyone who are descendants of famous slave owners too?

This is what happens when conservatives don’t believe that race matters. I know I’m not supposed to say this kind of stuff on here, but this is going to keep happening until conservatives understand that these people do not care about your heritage. They have their own interests, that they are going to fight for in groups against you.

Gay will fight as a group for their interests.

Blacks will fight in a group for their interests.

Asians will fight in a group for their interests.

Hispanics will fight in a group for their interests.

Etc.

Whites will... “ I’m an individual” “ I’m color blind” “ we’re all one race, man”
And then signal how not racist they are by attacking other whites.

They are attacking OUR heritage, but everyone is to scared to be called “racist”.

White people cant even exist as a political group so how could we even fight against the destruction of OUR heritage and OUR history?

I never thought it was legal for them to be in government.

Its pretty big national security issue.

We see the product of it now.

I could find better qualified people in a state prison.

Thankfully my local monument is still standing. In NC on 5/10/1909. During Confederate Memorial Day Gloria Victis was dedicated to 2,500 Rowan Country soldiers. It was paid for & is still owned by the United Daughter's of the Confederacy. Due to the ownership issue it is much more complicated if they were to try & remove it...

The big bean take over. Shut the border we said. The politicians refused and look at Texas, California and Florida where 1 out of every 4 people are here illegally. The US has been invaded. We should respond accordingly, like the Texicans did 170 years ago.

isn't revisionist history doubleplus good, brother? unpersons, unplaces, unthings, unwords, all for the good of the party, the language must be rewritten.

newspeakdict

i would say that the town in new jersey i grew up in would be on a list of towns to rename because a) it's a word from leni-lenape language which is a reminder that the natives once lived there and were run off by the "evil white invaders" and 2) that word means "tobacco pouch" which subconsciously promotes tobacco use but thankfully people are so god-damned stupid that they truly seem believe that it's named for a place that william penn used to go and hunt rabbits with his hawk thus the name should be safe for a while.
