Fruit and berry trees
Wild edible plants.
Trapping wild hogs.
It is a lot of work but it’s fun.

I miss My chickens.

I can’t eat fried eggs because the thought of dead baby chicken running all over my plate makes me want to vomit.

A chicken lays eggs even if a rooster is not present. If a rooster is present then the egg will have a little spot of blood in the center of the yolk.

I really respect people like you. I have this dieing desire to own a farm and provide for my own. I keep telling my husband I want to be a bush people. It’s so much hard work and to me seems so rewarding. I am tired of the California life. It is not all it’s played up to be. God has blessed me, but I have a desire to return the favor. My husband has a different mind a compromise is hard to come to.

The female chicks have different markings than the males.

Build some rooster boxes and lock them up at night and let them lose in the morning. You will have to deal with the crowing but generally the Alpha rooster does the majority of crowing as long as You keep them together. The crowing isn't that bad and they only crow about 15 - 20 times a day.

BTW I love My roosters because they have way more personality than the females. The roosters are also more noble because the lead the females to food and they look out for their safety.

Roosters can get pretty mean. My grandma used to take a board into the chicken coop with her. If the rooster came at her, she'd whack him with it, which gave her enough time to gather the eggs and get out of there before he came to.

I had chickens for 10 years. Im taking a break right now but will get them again. I loved having them. The eggs are great, and chickens keep stink bugs down and are good tick control too. Plus chicken manure is great fertilzer.

Chicken poop soup. The plants loved it!!

You will have to light their coop.
Light controls laying.
If you dont light the coop, natural rythym takes over and egg production slows in winter sun.

I didnt light my coop. I figured id give the girls a break lol

One of our roosters is very cool. He does a little rooster dance around the hens.

I'm in bed and my dog just heard my playing your video. He ran over and started pulling covers away to try to find the baby chick! Lol

Yes well, 50/50 and so you aren't far off from that! In the olden days, that was fine, because you could make a nice meal. Don't forget, broth cures everything. You can actually make broth a dozen times with the same bones, if you freeze them. If you don't want to eat your extra roosters you might find a person on craigs list who needs a new rooster.

We forget this when we order female chicks from a hatchery, that 50/50 is still the rule!

i think that means you can tell which sex baby chicks are by the markings.
