Ergot may have been used to poison certain families (by witches) and then accuse those members of practicing craft by the witches. Hexerei was widespread among the early Dutch Puritans as some families clung to their familial pagan practices. Nobody is really sure. The narrative is that the evil Puritans claimed some poor girls were practicing devil hexes. And that may not even be half the story. If the goal was to end prosecution for craft, then the heag witches were successful.
