Yes, they could pull a stunt like that, and that would give the Republicans and Trump huge momentum to amend the constitution to patch what is essentially a loophole. Imagine if Trump lost the presidential election in 2020 but Republicans regained control of Congress and decided to vote for Trump as speaker. It would never happen, but can you imagine the outcry from the Dems if they put Trump back as third in the line of succession after ousting him from the White House? Without him having any elected position at all at that point? There's probably a very good reason no congress in the history of this nation has ever pulled that stunt before. |
