I had a beautiful long haired double pawed I got at shelter at about a year old. Even after neutering he sprayed. Apparently that’s not a guarantee they will stop but he was a true Tom Cat. He’d catch rodents on weekly basis like a kill from Africa. lol He was also funny. If he didn’t like you you’d know. One of the best cats I ever had. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 76271803 United States 12/22/2018 04:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I picked up a stray black cat a couple years back that was used to being outside. So anytime the outside door would open he would slip outside for most the day and then come back inside at the end of the day. Quoting: waterman The cat was afraid of nothing. The first day I brought him in the house my two dogs which are a pit bull and a Boston terrier came to initiate the new guy. The pit bull comes running at the cat with the the Boston in hot pursuit. The cat unphased slaps the pit bull in the face two or three times and the pit bull decided it didn’t want anything to do with the new housemate. The Boston decided the same as he is only good as backup for the piitbull. The number of bodies of animals that cat laid in our yard the short time we had it was unbelievable. One day I came home and there was a line of 5 dead moles about 2 feet apart all along my driveway. There were dead snakes...dead birds...dead chipmunks. One day I look 20 feet up in the tree and that cat is chasing a squirrel in the tree. The funniest I saw was we were leaving and I see this wiener dog with long ears running for his life and right behind him was black cat. One other time we had a bat in the house...I knocked it to the ground with a shoe and without missing a beat black cat picked it up and took it outside When that cat would come in at night my wife would sit in the chair and the black cat would put his paws on her shoulders and stare right into her eyes and sometimes after killing a snake his eyes would be crossed for a few hours. That was the best cat we ever had but only had him about a month...I think he killed everything in the neighborhood and moved on to better hunting grounds because one day he never came back home. That cat was the John Wick of cats..he was a killing machine Sounds like my kind of cat. :Kittycat2: |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 76271803 United States 12/22/2018 04:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I need a cat, or a mating pair for mouse and squirrel control. Quoting: Anymous Cowboy They say Maine Coon's are great, but not sure I want to pay $1000 per cat. Any advice on getting good, friendly mousing cats? I suspect females respond to reproductive sterilization better than males. You want a female, as small as possible, and as young as possible. But, the other poster is right. Peanut butter is the way to go. Mix it with oil and water to make it almost liquid and so the odor gets in the air. If you have a lot of mice use a live trap. The odor of mice also attracts more mice. We had major problems with mice and shrews. Had 2 cats a tuxedo and Russian Blue. Every day I’d find at least 5 rodents outside by door. Problem is cats don’t usually hunt for them inside the house. Outside sure. IDK but inside they don’t care. I think they think the mice are there as roommates or something. You’re right smell is the biggest factor in controlling. It’s double edged sword having cats for just the smell of them can deter mice yet the cat food and other rodents dead or alive can attract them. We used ozone generators you can buy from amazon that’s effective and safe for removing all smells if you are out of area when using. It can also kill and deter them. You can keep an ozone generator on continuously as needed in places like an attic etc. You can’t really smell one mouse and if you do there’s probably a bunch already. They leave their scent on every single thing. How they find each other. Hardest thing to eliminate in between walls. Mice and other rodents also travel high. On top of curtains, doorways, etc. We had some take home in doors of our appliances and inside of front door. They can enter anywhere through a hole the size of a pencil eraser. It’s a living hell if you’ve had so please don’t judge me for my opinions on removing them. I want them dead and gone. Very important. Make sure all entrances are blocked with metal mesh so they don’t chew through. Set every single kind of trap you know of repeatedly. Eventually you will limit them to a controlled amount. I don’t think you can ever rid them 100% depending on where you live. Remember the ones that leave your house are going to go looking elsewhere like your neighbors so just when you think they’re gone they come back cause your neighbors are doing same as you. They can be living in your car as well. Another thing that often happens with a mice infestation is it attracts other things like shrews and bats. That’s whole other story. It truly is Hell once you get especially if you have children but you are on track with getting cats. The more the better. Good luck. |

I was away a couple months and my daughter didn’t bring in the bird feeders at night. I came home to rats falling from the elm trees. It was bad, really bad. I tried live traps, electronic traps, nothing was working. This feral cat showed up and after a couple months not one rodent survived. It took another couple months to get her to trust me enough to catch her. She earned a place of honor in our house. I can tell you the difference between our useless mouser cat and this amazing rat killer. You need to be really careful playing with her. Just a tiny sound or movement she notices. A piece of string and it becomes a game of life and death. Visit a shelter and check out which cat goes for the kill if you make slight scratching sound, bring a string or feather. You will be able to tell the killer |

There’s a reason why the Egyptians worshiped them and sailors had on ships. In Egyptian times they also controlled the rodent population in grain storage. Supposedly one reason Black Death became so rampant was due to the banning of cats. |

Plus so many are considered kittens at one year yet full grown. People tend to get rid of them when they get big. Best part is most cats are already neutered and litter trained. |

You dont' need to pay big money to get a good cat for this. Just look for free ones on craigslist or pick one up at your local humane society. As long as you let your cat be an outdoor cat, it will be great at getting rid or mice and squirrels. I've got some cats, I don't think any of them have ever killed a squirrel, but they will chase them away. They do kill mice and rabbits though. |

One even played with snakes like ribbons. Some rodents aren’t healthy food sources for they are exposed to pesticides much more than other animals. If you have barn cats or the like for rodent control then not feeding them would be more efficient for mousing. If you have as a pet keeping them healthy they will still hunt to play. |

All cats will hunt but you can’t predict what they prefer. My double pawed tabby ate squirrels leaving only the tail and face. Another was a bird hunter. One now links rodents. Plus an outdoor cat doesn’t need a litter box and make your house smell.:Rocking cat1: |

I always kept a cat around. I noticed my female cats did not like to catch squirrels as much as the males, but overall, they were better mouser's because they waited for it longer. My orange-striped has been catching more mice now since the weather turned colder. Quoting: ThisIsHowitIs ^^ yep I would go for an orange cat for some reason they seem to be a bit stocky more muscled than the other colored cats. |
