In my 20-30s I used to do that to relieve boredom, too.

Then I realized what a shit mind-altering substance alcohol actually is.

I'm high IQ and my mind is in high-gear all the time, even at night. I'm a very light sleeper. That's why I don't care for uppers like alcohol (yes, it is a stimulant). They make me too restless, anxious and I don't like the avalanche of thoughts and ideas they induce.

These days I occasionally do prescription codeine or diazepam. There's nothing like being able to calm your mind and think of nothing. If I got my hands on a good dissociative (non-hallucinogenic), I'd probably want to try that, too.

Oh, to be able to switch off my brain for a while... just being nothing in darkness.
