Personal attachment and suppressed anger.
I've been thinking a lot about the Louis CK thing lately.
A lot of articles and tweets were made destroying CK for his lack of empathy, citing how he clearly lied in November of 2017 when he said he would "sit back and listen".
I couldn't understand why people cared so much about jokes. Why were they so hurt by something a comedian said? Why can't they just avoid tard? What do they possibly have to gain by bashing his right to free speech?
Personal attachment and suppressed anger.
I'm guilty of it- perhaps you are too. This is when someone does or says something that you feel attacks your beliefs or morals. For instance, when I hear news about groups wanting to ban guns, I become angry because I am concerned for America's welfare. If guns are taken away, then my family won't be safe. This is an example of taking an external resource and personally attaching it to something you value deeply. The article about gun control doesn't want to put my family in danger, but I can't help but read it that way.
Suppressed anger. This is why the offended simply cannot turn away, and why Louie himself feels he must tell the joke- they have anger within them that they have been carrying around probably ever since childhood.
They do not know how to process this anger, let alone channel it in a healthy direction. They carry this anger with them daily, feeling the intense necessity to release it. This anger and hatred is building up but has nowhere to go.
Sometimes when I'm really pissed off at the world, I pray for someone to fuck with me so I am justified in doing some physical harm to someone. But what do I do if no one fucks with me? This anger has to be released somehow in some way or another.
And this is how some people feel on a daily basis. They are carrying massive amounts of anger and hatred, and do not know how to express it. And then as if God came down and handed them a miracle, Louis CK comes out with edgy jokes. Perfect! Now I can yell at everyone all day and I am justified because my emotional security or whatever. Finally, my anger and self-hatred can be released. They aren't mad at Louis CK. They're not even mad at the world. They're mad at themselves.
The offended cannot look the other way because they are hungry for a reason to scream. |

On a serious note, I revised this several times but it just kept getting auto-flagged by GLP. Thread: Trying to post a thread about the louie thing... The find and replace e>ee was the only trick to get it through. Any non-roasters have an idea what GLP flagged on this thread? Here's the TL;DR: People got offended by Louis C.K., I in turn got offended and then learned a magical lesson about life. |
