I once grew worms, I read a book called "Worms Eat My Garbage". (it's a composting book) I think it would be quite easy. You might also like the chicken-raising books by Harvey Ussery. I'm trying to remember if he grew worms for his all-natural flock. At Polyface farm (the farmer there is another really neat author) they raise meat animals and take them from pasture to pasture. When they move the meat animals on, they bring in the "chicken tractor" so that the birds eat the worms and maggots that have come in to eat the manure left behind by the meat animals. Now that right there is using nature to do your work! I had 2 hens that totally loved mealworms - though a hunk of watermelon didn't last too long either. Last one was a rooster that wondered into the yard on a rainy day .. He was pretty cool .. more finicky an eater than the girls. I'd say his favs were spaghetti or low main ... actually mis that lil` dude. Doesn't stop me from eating them though ; ) GetchaPull! |

If you cut the slugs up into manageable sizes, the chickens will get used to eating them, then you can simply toss whole slugs into your coop...or if they range for the day, they will find them. Takes awhile though. If you are not busy weaving your own magick, you are trapped in anothers spell. “It’s time you realized that you have something in you more powerful and miraculous than the things that affect you and make you dance like a puppet.” – Marcus Aurelius |

My Chickens also enjoy unsalted shelled peanuts, (you have to partially open them, or crack them first). Grubs are O.K., Crickets - not so much. Mine are spoiled little brats... Their day consists of foraging, eating, lounging around the radio, listening to Opera, Bluegrass, and Symphony music. . Never thought of a radio for them Yes they like music. I mentioned this once before here on GLP... I'm a channel surfer, and when I work outside I noticed certain stations I listened to fascinated the Chickens. My observations of their behavior indicated Opera, Bluegrass (Old Time Show), and Symphony music as their favorites... Pop, Rock, R&B, Jazz, Rap, or anything else they are not interested in. Another good use for radio is you can use it to keep predators away. When I have had to leave for a few days and can't be there to lock them up at night (they free range) I set up a radio on a timer in or near the coop. I set it to come on at night on a talk radio station. I figure human voice would be more of a deterrent to nighttime predators than opera or elevator music. A light coming on near the coop would work also as long as your hens don't decide to come out because of the light! When we were snowed in and couldn't get feed for weeks on end, I'd supplement with pasta to keep them entertained and make sure the feed managed to last. I don't know what lies they told you, but I can promise they were lies. There's a fine line between training, trauma, and torture. |
