Went to buy seed potatoes of my favorite variety, Yellow Finn, the other day, and those were all gone, so I will be growing some sort of red potatoes, says prolific and thin-skinned.
Planted them today in two more buckets from Walmart. Layer of hay, layer of soil, potato eyes, layer of soil, layer of nearly-rotted hay. Will be begging neighbors for grass clippings for the rest of the growth. If no grass clippings, then more hay, as they grow.
Harvest day - lay the bucket on its side, gently turn upside down, potatoes fall out, soil and hay and grass go on top of other plants and trees. VOILA!!
I've grown potatoes in nothing but grass clippings in the past - just put the seed potatoes on the ground, covered them, then kept covering them as they grew up. Great harvest!
