Hey Pooka! Free pigs: [ link to houston.craigslist.org (secure)] I gotta get a stock trailer to haul the free goats. I have a large dog cage made of wire that I could use for the pigs, but they are the only species of livestock prohibited in my town. Besides, I have wild hogs I need to trap first. People need to learn to slaughter and process animals for SHTF. It's a necessary skill. On the same note, my chickens are getting old and I get fewer eggs each week. I plan to slaughter the old ones and buy new, young stock for my new chicken yard. Quoting: darth You sure find the greatest things, Darth! Those old chickens are going to make some fine chicken and dumplings and chicken stew! Not sure a wire dog cage would contain the pigs - I think they can bite through wire. Wouldn't make much of a life for them, with no mud to root in and all that. I'd love to have chickens but haven't thought of a way to do it in this small area, and neighbors would complain about the flies. Good going, Darth - you could have a huge barn filled with animals at this rate! Quoting: Pooka I am not communicating clearly. The wire cage is just for transporting the piggies to my farm; I have some fenced yards they could live in on a more permanent basis....at least until it is time for a BBQ. Ref keeping chickens in the city, if you only have hens, they are quieter. Ducks make even less noise and mine seem to eat primarily mud. I don't have many problems with flies because I put out fly traps. I share eggs with all my neighbors and that helps them accept my large flock of birds. Biggest issue is that when it rains, the chicken yard has quite an odor.
