Woodsie User ID: 53433432 United States 02/03/2019 11:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Kubrick was one of cinema's giants; if he'd only made Space Odyssey his reputation would have been secure, but it is only one of a half-dozen works that anyone else would have called their masterpiece (Paths of Glory, Dr Strangelove, Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket, and of course, the Shining). King is/was much more prolific - Kubrick only directed ten major films but King turned out novel after novel, sometimes as many as three a year, for decades. Virtually every book is better than the movie by definition, but comparing movies and books is like comparing a record album and a concert, they are two different mediums, one immersive (the book and concert) and the other passive (films/audio recordings). One of the few exceptions in my experience is Random Harvest, a good book but a fantastic film - the film's greatness having more to do with entertainment (and a happy ending) than the deeper meaning of the material itself (post war trauma). As for King's greatness, I enjoyed reading his stuff when I was young (The Stand and the Talisman kept me enthralled), but it is only cotton candy, a diversion. It reads like it would make a great movie, but novel dialogue rarely sounds "right" in a movie. Elmore Leonard is similar, his books read "like a movie" but most of the films made of his books fall flat, the richness of his characters untranslatable in the visual medium. Kubrick vs. King? I'll take Stanley. |

It's more about the way the people react rather than just the gore caused by the real monsters. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 76566247 United States 02/03/2019 01:06 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I read the book and saw the movie. The book is better and has much more detail of what's going on. Quoting: JimH This is true of most book to movies. I can understand why King hates Kubrick's version. The book is so much better than the movie. King called Shelly the most mysonigist character on film. She sniveled her way through most of the movie and Jack came across as a comcial character. Ha! Ha! Ha! 'Here's Johhny!' After watching it again, I had to laugh at Jack's hilarious expressions and antics. King felt that the male protagonist was much more serious. |

Oh whatever! Some of his books are the most watched and read by a large audience now. The Shaw Shank Redemption, The Stand(which seems to be a big favorite) and Carrie. I agree with King on this one. The Shining is my favorite book of Kings and the movie was a huge disappointment. |
