Steve was skinny, small kid who was terrible at sports. When he became a father, he pushed his kids to be good at sports because he wanted to live vicariously through them.
There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of either merit or sense.

Jonbenet Ramsey was a little girl who, like too many little girls today had a mother that pushed her into beauty pageants so that she could experience that life vicariously through her daughter, as she couldn't achieve it on her own.

It might help to understand the root, OP:
A vicar (/ˈvɪkər/; Latin: vicarius) is a representative, deputy or substitute; anyone acting "in the person of" or agent for a superior (compare "vicarious" in the sense of "at second hand"). Linguistically, vicar is cognate with the English prefix "vice", similarly meaning "deputy".

So, what you're asking is can someone use the word vicariously in a sentence without actually using the word vicariously, got it.

Sure.

Someone asked i Vi Cariously thought this thread was worth a damn... honestly, I had to answer no.

How's that? Only way to be more "subtle" is to not use the word, or at least not properly, which is just silly - unless you're one of those people that use fake language like "in-cel" and that sort of drivel.
