I just looked up ADS-B Automatic dependent surveillance—broadcast (ADS–B) is a surveillance technology in which an aircraft determines its position via satellite navigation and periodically broadcasts it, enabling it to be tracked. It's amazing how dependent we have become on such a fragile system as GPS. There are other systems though. I'm not sure if it's still operating, but airports used to broadcast a signal that aircraft could use for directional aid. And as I understand it there's a partial ground based gps system in alpha right now. |
