Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77740998 And you won't be able to get them in the fall. Hatcheries are selling out now. [youtube] Many local jurisdictions have made it illegal to raise and keep chickens. Seems like a great plan until big gov't comes to euthanize your birds. Search "California birds euthanized"..... The gov't does what they want. Plus, most can't take care of a dog well, let alone a chicken.... |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 75936317 United States 06/20/2019 12:23 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have a relative that went all out with chickens. They had brooders and were raising them. They had a total of fifty of them. They sold some of the hen's eggs to get them feed for the winter time. Quoting: DuckNCover Problem they had were predators. There are fox and chicken hawks where we live. They killed off all the hens and within one year they had no more chickens... So even if you have chickens for food and barter, they could be wiped out by predators... Not theses kind of chickens. [link to www.dailydot.com (secure)] I have a six foot chicken wire fence with a hot wire from the fence charger on top. Concrete poured on the base of the wire. I wish I had video of the day our tomcat decided to bite the hot wire. He was frozen there pulsing with the current until Wifey pried his jaws off it with a broomstick. Cat used up at least 3 of his 9 lives, but he survived. BTW, we have hawks and owls that want to eat my birds as well. I have a giant net bought if that becomes a problem. However, my chickens know to hide under trees when they see such birds about. Only real predator problem is the Texas Rat Snake eating eggs. When I catch them I cut them up for the chickens to eat. It is important to provide cover for chickens to hide under when they see birds of prey. Mine free range, but I keep their coop close to the house. So the only tine I worry about predators is late winter/early spring when the predators get desperate enough to risk coming close to the house. |

Plus, most can't take care of a dog well, let alone a chicken.... You can set up a brooder in your garage. All you need is an infrared light to keep them warm, a wood box with pine shaving for bedding, and food and water. Breeders ship day old chicks through the US mail. When you pick them up at the post office, you just need to dip their beaks in the water to teach them to drink and they will figure out the rest. The roosters won't be old enough to crow for six months. If war does come, you will be glad you have them. If war does not come, you can make chicken dinner. |

Great mother to raise the chicks. Very attentive and taught the chicks well. Some broodies are not good Mama's. I've had to take chicks away from a bad mother hen before. FWIW-My Brahma has never gone broody. |

My buff orpingtons always turn out to be the best broody hens, but you can never tell which ones will take to it and which ones will just keep on ignoring the clutches. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76531980 Buff Orphingtons and Lavender Orphintons are are my favorite. They come in many colors. They also do well in cold climates. Orpington love! It's a good idea to separate breeders with a higher brooding drive, from egg layers and meat birds. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77740998 And you won't be able to get them in the fall. Hatcheries are selling out now. Our pullets have just started laying. We have 7 black sexlink and 3 red sexlink plus 6 Buff Orpington, for a total of 16 pullets. Its fun watching their eggs get bigger fast. We have 10 older laying hens too. We anticipate some days with 2 dozen eggs. Will not be selling but giving to relatives and friends in need. Our cleaning lady gets a dozen farm eggs as a tip. ======= Chickens are an asset that utilize garden/kitchen waste. Chicken poo is possibly the best fertilizer if you let it sit for an extended period. |

We feel good about that. We'll be down to a more manageable circa 20 laying hens. Coup will be tight but OK. People really like my wife giving them a dozen farm eggs with beautiful bright yellow yokes. We all need friends in tough times. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 73181031 United States 09/18/2019 08:49 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | They also lay pretty large eggs and they're aggressive (for a chicken). I've seen them run off hawks and foxes. They can fly fairly well and they're solid black, which means they're somewhat camouflaged. They're also really great mothers and hunters. One downside is that they're kind of loud when they're in a good mood. I find it entertaining but sometimes it can be annoying. Another downside is that they're not that tasty (I'm sure most free range breeds are similar). I've only eaten the roosters, so the hens could be better. |
