We were told that we could give him letters to take back to the flight crews, with our good wishes. My sister and I, along with the required good wishes, asked how we to might become "space pilots". The letter my sister got back, many long months later, said that NASA was always looking for the best qualified people and that she would need to learn engineering, aviation, and become a pilot in the Military. It never told her no. It was mostly a from letter with with a hand written aside that said words to the effect, that young people would be the future of NASA, and it was upon her to prepare herself for the future.

My letter was similar, but I'd said in my letter to them, thinking it as asset, that I was already 6 foot tall, the hand written aside said that there would always be a need for Engineers and developers but that the Astronaut Corps was limited to those 5 foot 10 or less (Think 'Gus' Grissom). They didn't tell my sister no, they told me no.

And that, my friends is why I'm a trash collecting romance writer today ... kidding!
