I don't think it's a matter of being shallow. I just think the gym is not an ideal place to meet women. They're there to work out. Their minds are focused on their fitness routine, and they're also likely self-conscious about being a sweaty mess.

Back when I was young and single, the gym would be one of the last places I'd want to meet a guy. Of course back then, we tended to date people we'd known most of our lives, either from school, church, the neighborhood, etc. We were not keen on talking to guys who were total strangers.

Here's some advice, OP. Spend some time learning body language and how to read signals. I'm pretty sure you were receiving "leave me alone" body language signals before you asked for her name. (Also, she could've had any variety of reasons for wanting to be left alone, not just being snobby or shallow.)

It is important to learn how to read people, and with the increase of people communicating through tech, this is becoming a lost art.

Learning body language cues will open up a whole new level of understanding for you. You'd be amazed how much people communicate without ever saying a word. Also, understanding and respecting those cues could open doors that would normally be closed. You might even notice that there's already a woman in your life who's receptive to you and just waiting for you to see it.

Why else would you go to a gym? You can do pushups at home.

Yes there is 'harm in it.' Do you like being panhandled in the streets by smelly bums trying to intimidate you out of your money when you're only trying to get from one place to another? Men are singularly bad at sensing and especially communicating in "body language"! There are exceptions, I suppose.

I've tried consciously for the last 40 years to master body language to the extent that I could attract and seduce a reliable sex partner that I actually wanted to be with. That, and the requisite wealth, looks and health was not enough. There's still something missing. If any woman was in my life already, she should have made a move. Same for OP and his life. Since women understand these things much better than most men ever can, they really should make the first move and just state that they're interested and available. Men will never realize that and the only way to succeed with getting a women is to hit on all of them by rote and go with anyone that's tolerable that will acquiesce. It's clumsy, but there's no alternative.

BTW, where IS a better place to hit on girls? Not everyone has a job or is in school. Many of us have our own solitary businesses and rarely get out in public.
