UPDATE Pg 46: 'Liquid gold' and 'a sight for sore eyes' are some of the ways people are describing the rainfall And this is the first thing I think of when I think of "beautiful" Australia. Felines are sacred to the Divine, and are connected to Fire, the Element(s) will spare no one. ummm.. the cats go feral and ravage the natural wild life.. so, not cool.... we don't kill domestic cats or even orphans in the cities.. just on a more selective basis in the rural and outback areas.... the same thing happened when rabbits were brought to australia.... Feral cats are horrible. I've had all sorts of predators stalking my chickens and animals but the worst was when I had a feral cat coming to the property. The fucker was smart. Took months and a neighborhood watch to finally take him out. He not only killed chickens, but two of my neighbour's cats, not just dead but disemboweled inside the house at night when everyone was sleeping. Nobody knows how he got inside. They have no fear. And that was just one cat that managed to wreak havoc in the neighbourhood. I shudder to think what a band of ferals could destroy. These aren't sweet cuddly kitties. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. |

UPDATE Pg 46: 'Liquid gold' and 'a sight for sore eyes' are some of the ways people are describing the rainfall Some of those scenes look like they come straight from hell. Makes me feel a bit guilty here in Vancouver where we are having a very normal winter, rainy and mild, people whining about a "rainfall warning" that will dampen their New Years Eve plans and how disappointed they are that there isn't enough snow to go skiing. I feel for the people sitting on the beach surrounded by flames, but I guess they are luckier than the ones that couldn't even get to the beach. All I have is words of support for Australia, which isn't going to help, but it's all I've got. Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak. |

UPDATE Pg 46: 'Liquid gold' and 'a sight for sore eyes' are some of the ways people are describing the rainfall By AAP17:15 Several bushfire-ravaged communities in NSW have greeted the new year under immediate threat, amid growing fears for a missing 72-year-old and property losses. Fretting families and tireless firefighters have rung in the new year watching a cool change wreak further havoc across NSW's fatal fire grounds. As fire authorities predicted the loss of multiple homes, a telecommunications outage left families on New Year's Eve unable to contact loved ones on the fire-ravaged south coast. "No communication is a rarity in today's world so it's an uncomfortable feeling," Melbourne man Nic Baxter told AAP last night, as he waited to hear from his father in Batemans Bay. "Fortunately, he is located in an area where I'm sure he is OK, but still very uncomfortable. "I don't think I can celebrate NYE to be honest, too much on my mind thinking about the fires and family." NSW Police earlier confirmed all power had been lost from South Nowra to Moruya and "potentially beyond", affecting at least 46,000 people and the supported telecoms network. Fire conditions are expected to ease today after a cool change, bringing gusts of up to 80km/h and dry lightning strikes, crossed the state. Five bushfires, including the 230,000-hectare Currowan blaze on the south coast and the 31,000ha Clyde Mountain fire ringing Batemans Bay, were at emergency warning level as the clock struck midnight. Waterbombing aircraft helped efforts to stop a 250ha blaze reaching residential homes at Blue Haven on the Central Coast. |

Australia is supposed to be about the same size as the US but, only 25 million or so live there. That is like one US State. Is the term 'hordes' a colloquialism, or a term misused here. The hordes in Mallacoota included many that had escaped other parts of the region in Victoria state known as East Gippsland. On Sunday, officials had given a stark warning for everyone in a large swath of East Gippsland west of Mallacoota to leave the area ahead of the anticipated extreme fire threat on Monday and Tuesday. Well to the north, at least two people were killed in the New South Wales town of Cobargo, which suffered extensive damage, according to Australia’s ABC News. Several others are still missing across southeast Australia...." |

UPDATE Pg 46: 'Liquid gold' and 'a sight for sore eyes' are some of the ways people are describing the rainfall Five missing, two dead as nation burns By AAP17:55 Fire crews battling hundreds of blazes are facing another tough day across Australia as burnt out communities begin counting their losses. Five people are missing, two more are dead and thousands are cut off in remote communities as out-of-control bushfires savage NSW and Victoria. NSW Fire Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says it's "one of the worst, if not the worst fire seasons" his state has faced. "We are absolutely stretched ... we have fires burning from the Queensland border all the way down to the Victorian border across the Great Dividing Range," he said. His dire warning comes as an overnight southerly wind change brings "tricky" conditions to the north of the state today. "It will be cooler but they're strong and gusty south to southwesterly winds that will lead to a change in the direction the fires are moving," meteorologist Dean Narramore told AAP. "It'll expand the fire area, so you're going to have new challenges, new problems and new areas impacted. "They're going to cause tricky fire conditions, particularly for those really large fires around Sydney." Mr Narramore said some blazes are so large, firefighters are likely to be battling different weather conditions in the eastern and western perimeters of the fires. "It's just unbelievable," he said. |
