This is true, though the levels are still there to be accessed by those who care to. You heart does need to have been thoroughly broken before you can even access the deeper levels however.

I have often speculated whether this means that being human is properly defined as this condition where you have to navigate emotional and conceptual challenges.

Once you are not within this condition anymore - which is an artificial, manufactured condition as you say - then they are no longer challenges. The answers form of their own accord, for that is how mind works.
