The Creation of an Acid Lake

Crater lakes that form atop volcanoes are typically acidic, with pH values as low as 0.1, which could burn skin. In comparison, normal lake water has relatively neutral pH values near 7.0. A late October measurement of Kīlauea’s new acid lake, made possible through the use of a drone gathering a water sample with a plastic sock, shows the pH at 4.0, which Patrick calls “intermediate acidity” for volcanic lakes. “This shows us that fresh groundwater is probably mixing in.”

However, he says, this is cause for concern. “Kīlauea has had an explosive history for hundreds of years. Those explosions were thought to have been triggered by magma interacting with groundwater. And so, in the future, if magma rises in such a way that it interacts with groundwater here or the water pond that we have now, it could potentially trigger explosive activity and that would obviously be very hazardous.”

It is possible the lake will continue to expand until it reaches equilibrium with the surrounding water table, Patrick said, which means it could rise another 50-60 yards, or 150-180 feet.

Patrick said HVO and USGS will continue to monitor the development of the lake, as it could pose risks to the surrounding area: If lava returns to the summit, he explained, it would likely evaporate the lake in a steam explosion.

Wheres the water coming from?
It needs to be diverted or its gonna get down to the limestone and erupt.salt water is fine but not fresh water.matter of fact,dump a shitload of salt in it.if im correct the salt water wont react with the quicklime.find a chemist to verify though.its all about blocking that chem reaction.

So if the lake keeps rising it will be at lest 240ft deep
and double in length and width

A lake this size hasn't been seen in at least 200 years most likely never

My question is could this be the Explosive Phase that also causes the massive landslides recorded throughout the Islands

The Hilina Slump is currently accelerating towards the ocean

Would a huge Phreatic Explosion at the summit create a landslide at the Slump?

Hi OP!

I have been keeping the original thread updated with all the news & video about the pond that is growing in the bottom. I think USGS has basically said that an explosion could happen, but it would be limited (like to the crater, I think).

We all know how transparent they were last year.

If it's the same place I 'saw' it lights up the night sky and a small boat with some people on it race away for their lives....

Hope I'm wrong.
