So I guess to the powers that be will just let it rip through the masses and be done with it.

Solar panel output can drop by as much as 75% at the lowest point of the winter, depending on your lattitude.
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

How long can batteries hold a charge? How big a bank to get through winter? Grow lights, water pump, fans....think greenhouse.

:)

Appreciate you.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

Grow lights use a LOT of power, police actually look for houses with strangely high power usage to find people who grow weed.

I don't think it's a viable option to grow food on solar power... it would be far less expensive to buy a 10 year supply of shelf stable food as opposed to build a solar setup which may only last for 10 years and probably wouldn't supply as much nutrition.
 Quoting: R. Wordsworth

....I was thinking in bursts....

We get a lot of sun, but like 7 days out of 21 ish will be dark here. So maybe every other day a few hours of grow light.
 Quoting: CleverCreator

Nah wouldn't work. I agree with Wordsie it's just not practical to try and use grow lights on solar alone for a home project.
I indoor grow (not veggiesstoner) I have 4 LED grow lights that are equivalent to running 4 100 watt bulbs. Running the lights for 12 hours a day I use 4.8 kilowatt hours of juice. That's a pretty heavy daily load on a straight solar power system (unless you have a very large system). Plants need light to grow and most veggies need lots of light. If you cut back and try to burst it as you say, it won't be enough. Your plants will be small and will produce hardly anything so again the pay off isn't worth the effort. Less light=less growth=less product.
I have one more plant to harvest then will plant two tomato plants in one half of my grow tent just to see what kind of production I can get off my LEDs over the winter. Totally cost prohibited but will be a fun experiment.

That’s a good RW question.....how well can solar work through dreary winter days..... in Iowa we get a decent amount of sun, but when the dreary does come.... it can be over 7 days, at times ..... it is why we use wind power so much out here.

I wonder if we could do a small system of both?

One of the reasons I stayed in South Texas to retire is that the hypothesis about solar minimum may be true.

If it gets substantially colder whether due to the solar output, volcanoes erupting, nuke wars, or whatever, I can still plant crops here.

In fact, we can almost plant through all seasons here. I have seen turnips and beets survive the freezes we have as and even light snow.

The downside is the BUGS. My gardening is beset with pests.

Gotta stock up on pesticides to ensure a crop.

I have to agree with the Neem oil. It has worked well for me before, haven't used it in an outdoor garden setting though. I haven't tried the others. While I won't shy away from pesticides they wouldn't be my first go to option.

Thanks, nef.

I was wanting to try. If Iowa keeps the pattern, I don’t think the plants would suffer like a more cloudy area.

And while solar minimum is a threat. The pole reversal may present more of a fucked over than the grow issues.

I am reasonably confident in our food now. I will continue to bring in more until it totally dries up.

I just want to make sure that I am planning for longterm solutions.

Thanks for the good tips.

We tried some of those. For example, there was some kind of beetle on the tomatoes that The Queen sprayed with Neem oil. She said he acted like he enjoyed the shower.

However, it is clear that I need to study more on the natural alternatives.

As I have said before, I am a rank amateur as a gardener. However, I planted a fair amount of ground with a lot of different varieties and got a decent crop.

I need to get better at identifying specific pests and diseases as well as the remedies for each.

BTW, planted the last of the sugar cane this morning. I tried various methods that I saw on utube. At least some of he cane will come up. When I have cane, I found out its easy to start more.

Just cut sections with at least two nodes (I did 3-4 nodes) and put the pieces in water. After a week they sprout shoots and roots. Most say to plant horizontal.

Stephen F. Austin's American colonists started here back around 1820 in Brazoria County planting sugar cane. They got rich off the crops.

BTW, locked the cows out of that pasture. I am sure they will love eating the shoots coming up.

The best thing about my garden is sitting out in it watching the wildlife and rescuing delicate leafy plants from more mobile viney plants lassoing and strangulating them.

Next year I’m cutting my gardening losses and just going to sit out there and enjoy sitting in the wonderful low maintenance weeds that will grow there.

When I lived in Texas, the grasshoppers killed me. A mix of Listerine, dish soap and chewing tobacco tea in a hose end sprayer did them in. But at peak it had to be done daily.

On those grow lights, I really don't think they'd do cannabis or tomatoes. But they definitely do well for greens and sprouts. They're very low watt consumption and I'm running 10 of 12 aquaponics gone vermiponics beds with barrina 6500k and the grow lights. It'll all run off my 4 265 watt 24v solar system for at least 8 hours a day.

Not long enough for fruits but long enough for greens.

And not good enough for solid root crops either. Chard, mustard, mung bean sprouts, kale, spinach, lettuce, aloe vera and celery leaf is good.

I think for fruits or cannabis you'd need more intense lighting.

I have considered that.

I have an order in for some worms, but they have to wait for cooler weather to ship them.

Biggest thing my land needs is SAND or something to improve permeability.

Its "black gumbo" clay and the clay subsoil is only about a foot down.

Actually, its crappy soil, but we persevere.

When my older kids, now in their 30s, were small, I lived near Los Angeles.

One day I was driving down the freeway with the heavy metal blasting on the radio. Noticed that other drivers were looking at us.

I glanced over and both my kids were banging their heads on their car seats.

Strangely enough, both kids turned out GREAT!

Darth have you looked into maybe building a couple of worm bins and worm farm to add worms to your fields. Nothing will improve your soil like worms. Good soil makes for healthier plants which are more resistant to pests and disease.
 Quoting: Nefarious Libertine

I have considered that.

I have an order in for some worms, but they have to wait for cooler weather to ship them.

Biggest thing my land needs is SAND or something to improve permeability.

Its "black gumbo" clay and the clay subsoil is only about a foot down.

Actually, its crappy soil, but we persevere.

The best dirt I ever had in Texas was in base housing, because of the weekly yard inspections our beds had to be perfect.

When we moved out to the country, I thought we would have good dirt because the previous owners had lots of horses and FHA animals. Nope, to much urine and not enough manure. To make it worse it was all caliche. For you poor, underprivileged people that were never in west Texas, that stuff is harder than diamonds when dry and slippery than snot when wet. It'll suck you in like quick sand when the monsoon season sets in. Your tools better be knife sharp when you start and you'll be sharpening again before you're done.

I had some good results mixing the beds with peat moss to soften it up, but the stuff has gotten really expensive since then. If you have, or can get, some rotten straw, after you're done with a section, dig it in real well. The more the better. Let it sit til spring to compost in. You can add your hot manure at the same time, just give it a season off. The straw really helped me break up the caliche, it should work on your clay.

Another thing my folks swore by, is manure tea around the plants. I had to go to my neighbor to get the cow patties, but you already have them. Put one or two in a five gallon bucket and fill with water. Let it sit out in the sun for a day or two and then pour it around your plants. It's the best stuff! Be careful with tobacco near your tomato plants, though. Tomatoes don't like it.

50,000+ cases in the US. I think this will crank up more again post Labor Day weekend. I know people are tired of hearing this--- in two weeks

How are hospitalizations in your area?

Two is one, one is none. A "prepper" mantra. I don't know who said it here. Maybe Jazz, maybe Henry. But it's been a motto of mine for a long time. :)

Our commissary is out of cleaning supplies and air freshener. I stocked up on cleaning supplies a few months ago, but I didn't think about air freshener. I don't usually like chemicals, but I do keep a can in the bathroom. The shortage must be due to a compressor ingredient.
 Quoting: Serenity Now

I miss the commisary! I haven't been to one since my husband retired. We had a good laugh at everyone complaining at the one way aisles early in the pandemic! Sounded like commisary on payday to me! LoL

It was hit and miss on the cleaning aisles. Except for the Shout type stuff, I couldn't tell you what was missing, but there were a bunch of empty spaces.

I went in the VA hospital canteen last week. I was shocked...so empty...
I asked the clerk if they were going to close up soon...no, they said it’s been very few deliveries...

I posted about the feeding tube bags my husband uses a few weeks ago...
I am trying to get him by on two a day as they can only send us one per day...I am supposed to wash them with hot water, but it’s an infection risk imo..

Missing reading from some regulars on here...

Feeding tube bags for g-tube

Yes you can use them up to 24 hours, without rinsing

For sure longer 2-3X’s longer if you rinse them with warm water and get inside of bag rinsed good
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74308398

Thanks for replying...all of you
Catching up now on thread
I rinse them immediately after use multiple times
Hot water, no soap
What worries me is the balloon inside his stomach they don’t last forever...supposedly like 6-8 months and we are past that closer to 11
Eventually he will have to go in for replacement..it’s an outpatient procedure if all else is good...

NF, Happy for you...
Curry, sincere prayers for you and yours
Glad to see Larry here again
Doommonkey vicariously enjoying your garden...

Thank you all for your prayers...today was busy but not as stressful
I love y’all...back to reading and catching up...

Illinois did a backlog dump of 100,000 tests today which resulted in about 4,000 cases and Texas dumped about 1,500.

So in reality it's roughly inline with what we saw all week.

9 people hospitalized in New Hampshire, 318 in Massachusetts.

At the peak Massachusetts had about 4,000 hospitalized... not sure about NH.

I don't expect much of anything to come from bike week up here in NH, it was only a tiny fraction of what we would normally see for turnout and much less than what we had for 4th of July which was a nothingburger.
